Small towns near Medellin

I will be coming to Colombia soon and would like to research possible places to live. From what I've read, I think the climate around Medellin would suit me. (Bogata would be too cold.) I'm not a "city person" though. Are there some nice smaller towns, say within an hour of Medellin, that I should explore? Thanks for any suggestions and information.

This is a good question. I am curious what the responses will be, especially with regard to safety.

I would guess Rio Negro or San Antonio de Pereria would suit you, but the climate is cooler than Medellin. That's about all I know.

I am partial to my little hideaway south of Medellin..many do not go there. It is the home of the current Juan Valdez..it is the little town of Fredonia. Take the road to Caldas out of Medellin and drive for about 1.5 hours. You'll see a little wooden sign on a tree pointing down what looks like a gravel driveway. Take that for another 50 minutes ( depends on whats in the road). You will start up a mountian that seems to never end. Fredonia is perched on what seems to be a 90 degree angle against this mountain. Great climate! with the exception of the distance crack of automatic weaponry its a great peaceful place!

However, if you do not want to leave too far out of town..places like Guarne out towards the airport are great also..

Yes, of course safety is a given requirement. Fredonia is too far away from Medellin for me. I would want to be reasonably close to good medical care and veterinarian care. An apartment or condo would not work for me because I have dogs and I would need a house with some land around it.

Rio Negro is nice. Some of the richest people in Colombia live there.

Take a look around Guarne/Llano Grande/Rionegro Area, I think this is a perfect place for you to live. Fresh air, safe, beautiful landscapes and enough space for pets. I bought a finca in the area and I just love it there. They are building a brand new hospital very close to the airport, The San Vicente de Paul Hospital, which in my opinion is one of the best, it is being built with the latest technology and the best physicians in the area are connected to this hospital. As far as Vets, they have excellent ones ( I own 3 labs a Pekinese and a Shi-Tzu) so you will not have a problem, also you will be close to the airport which is a great advantage. I have seen your website, and would like to commend you for the work you are doing. Being an animal lover/defender myself, there is a lot of work to be done in this area of abandoned pets and overpopulation which only leads to pets being abused and negleted. If you would ever consider living in the area, I would be much interested in helping with this great cause. I will be moving to Colombia permanently next September

As many have pointed out, the Rio Negro/Llano grande area is good. But the weather is more Bogota like. Consider Envigado, Sabaneta, La Estrella, Caldas, Bello, and Girardota. They are all within The greater AburrĂ¡ valley, i.e., quite close to Medellin proper. Some, like Envigado, have been practically absorbed but still retain a small town air.

I have a house near Fredonia and have never heard any gunfire and have been going there for 12 years, although they like to shoot alot of fireworks.

I'll rent you the house if you're interested.

Send me a PM if you'd like more info

I thought the current Juan Valdez was from Andes?

Nevermind, I just re-read your post and says that he currently lives in Fredonia. Totally different. =D

Some good information above.
Depens on what you like, to buy a casa or to buy a finca or just rent.

Llano grande near the airport:

pro: beautifull surrounding, nice restaurants, handcrafts all over and really beautifull fincas, good roads and easy access to other villages. Flat land.
con: expensive, chilly in the night (hmm cold jaja)

St Fe de Antioquia:

Since there is a tunnel ist worthy to have a look within range I think
Its a warm to hot clmate

Pro: temparature, nice fincas
Con: highway to the villages in good shape , rest more or less , property might be expensive

Area north of medellin Copacabana, Girardota, Barbosa

Beauty of the villages and prices wil go down in same order as avbove.

Pro: recently new highway which makes entry more easily. climate moderate but rarely cold during nighttime.
From Giradota up to Barbosa and further you still can buy some nice fincas for reasonable prices
New Stores near Niquia so you wont have to enter Medellin

con: a bit far from the airport, difficult to find flat land

Take all your time because there is so much to see and take notice buying with respect to
"aguas and caminos" "compravente" "free of bankinterest"

By the way I bought my property from Juan Valdez, the old one which he used to relax with family.
Pro: Its a paradise for me
Con: had to get rid of all the coffee pants!!!

I will be glad to give some info if you like to and am curious about other info from "soulmates" near Medellin
