Small question on Bogotá

Hi,
I was supposed to join my guy and move to Cali this summer, however he might have to move to Bogotá for his work.. so now I have a question..
In Bogotá city (so not up in the mountains), is it possible to wear tanks/tees and sandals all year??
How is the weather over there..?
I just know Cali and I love the warmth.. so I just wanna know how it is with Bogotá!!!
Any response is appreciated!!

is it possible to wear tanks/tees and sandals all year?? Yes, it is possible but not highly recommended. It can get cold at night and early in the morning. Also I believe you might stand out a little in the more conservative society/culture of Bogotá.

When I first visited Bogotá I was curious as to why every one had a sweater tied around their shoulder or waist when it was so hot. Didn't take me long to discover that in an hour the temp can drop several degrees and usually does.

Bogota Weather Bogota is nice if you like it cool. It is definitely in the mountains boasting an altitude of over 8,300 feet. That is also why the weather is a little weird sometimes, very variable, but I like it. If it is rainy in the morning it will be warm and sunny in the afternoon. If sunny in morning it will be raining with sleet and hail in the afternoon. If it is hailing in the morning it is a sure sign of the apocalypse, run like hell. It should take a solid ten years to start seeing wear marks on that tank top.

Tongue in Cheek Humor A little tongue in cheek humor. The weather is highly variable it seems to me which is not entirely atypical of a high altitude location. I mean come on, I saw on RCN the other day that somewhere in the north of Bogotá or in Chia, somewhere around the savanna I don't remember exactly, they got almost two inches of sleet from a thunderstorm. I did post some non-biased links she could check out and see for herself. Moron?? I don't think so but you never know. I do have my "Homer" moments however. (Laugh Here! Overly serious people laugh doubly hard.)

See ya!

Pack a Good Umbrella and Goretex Rain Coat/Jacket You will need them many times. Forget the Tank top and Flip-flops for the most part LOL! Seems like whenever I visit Bogota, the Late Afternoon Rains follow me as reliably as the Sun rises in the morning. That late afternoon Rain is cold as Hell(nothing as cold and miserable as a late day Bogota rainstorm) and make sure you stand way back from Curbside Puddles as I swear the Bus Drivers Aim for 'em to splash a good load of dirty Industrial streetwater on a person for sport and pleasure,,,

Tees Yes, Tanks No. Sandals in the daytime. But do keep the sweater or jacket handy. It is a temperate city definitely cooler than Medellin. Daytime Temps range from 17-21 or so C..

Oh and yes Bogota is up quite high up something like 2,600 m to be exact. I believe that it is the largest city in the world at that elevation - there are no others that are larger & higher up.

Goretex is a great idea. LOL Miamimike is right,.I think that rains in Bogota can rival famed rainy places like Seattle. .. But umrellas are easy to come by too.

Yes, the weather in Bogota is one of its least attractive qualities, unless you're the kind of person who also loves Seattle's weather.

Forget about heat. Wait a year or two and you might experience 1 "hot" day.

Interesting to see people suggesting goretex raingear. I don't think I've ever seen a Colombian wearing that kind of "outdoor" gear in the city, unless maybe on a bike or something. EVeryone seems to just pop out an umbrella and keep slogging on.

Holllywood, On my first trip I wasn't prepared with Raingear and payed a very wet price for it! On subsequent trips, I never made the mistake again ;now I always have my small rainsuit in my backpack. On those Umbrellas, that first trip to Bogota in '94 we searched high and low for Umbrellas, as in most Spanish Countries at the first drop of Rain, seems the Umbrella venders are out on every major streetcorner. That wasn't our case in Bogota-good business oppurtunity,,LOL We couldn't find one and worse, we searched the small stores for a rain poncho and/or umbrella and couldn't find either so for other trips I always pack my own Gear and stay dry. Nothing worse then walking into a Cold Hotel room(no heaters in bogota hotel rooms at least where I have stayed)in the evening soaked to the bone,,,,My Hiker sneakers are Goretex lined also,,,

City of Eternal Spring Mario I have heard Medellin referred to as the city of eternal spring and also Guatalajara Mexico but not Bogota. Am I missing something? Miami Mike when I was in Bogota last year I saw all kinds of people running around with umbrellas. Maybe that has changed since you were there. I kept losing mine and bought 3 or 4 while I was there. You are right about them coming out of the woodwork when ir rains lol.

Eternal spring I think some idiot christened it that because he noticed that flowers tend to bloom all year in Bogota. Of course they bloom all year ANYWHERE in the tropics that isn't covered in snow, so that's a hell of a name.

I find the weather in BOG monotonous but certainly far from unbearable. Beats the hell out of Winnepeg or Khartoum.

I said that the *rains* in Bogota can rival the rains in cities like Seattle.

As for the goretex - I have seen them in Colombia.. agree that umbrellas are far more common (also more affordable), but if one is foreign, one is foreign, and locals will notice no matter what. No sense in leaving behind such a practical piece of clothing if it is already in the wardrobe.

Daily temps.. Seattle is seasonal so no go there, I don't speak farhenheit but imagine it must be fairly close say late spring and late summer and some points in between.
