Slur used against Colombians in Italy

[A couple of posts at the bottom sum things up well: Discuss the article if you wish, move on to another subject if it doesn't interest you, keep it civil, and bite your tongue if you feel the need to categorize Colombian women as easy or looking for a free meal. -Moderators]

=======================

I know this is a colombia discussion but this one has some connection

http://today.reuters.com/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=oddlyEnoughNews&storyID=2005-12-06T153531Z_01_DIT656107_RTRUKOC_0_US-ITALY-RACISM.xml

To quote from the website:

"Calling a foreigner a "dirty negro" in Italian is not necessarily a racist insult, Italy's highest court has ruled.

The verdict, relating to a case where a group of Italian men punched and insulted some women from Colombia, caused deep unease at a time when Italy is struggling to contain racism"

Not sure if this has been in news in colombia.

It is true the xenophobia in Europe now. Last summer I traveled around Europe with my wife. [We both have US passports] We could clearly see the anti-American sentiment in a few places, mostly anti Bush's international politics and the war.

I knew up front it was not a good idea to travel in Europe in the summer. Everything is crowded, people stink (like hell), the restaurants rip you off and it is difficult to find a decent priced hotel room. We had first class train tikets for nothing, they put you wherever they want and there is nothing you can do about it. The corruption makes yuu feel you are in the third world country sometimes. The best time we had was in Romania and Moldova while the worst was France, Morrocco and Spain.

What surprised me most was the extreme RACISM toward LATINOS in places of FRANCE, Spain and Italy. It is unbelievable!! It is true they have faced a high immigration from all over Latin America, especially Ecuador, Peru, Colombia and Dominican Republic. They put everybody in the same boat and called them SUDACAS. Some people had a nasty attitude when they look at you an you look Latino, but they immediately change a bit when they see you using US dollars, VISA and MASTERCARD. Spain is becoming more and more racist through the last few years. I am GLAD I don't live there! Nor would I come back in a long time.
Racist people are the most ingorant one, if they had been to school and learned more about their own history, they would probaly think differently.

WOP (spelled WOP) stands for With Out Papers - as in immigration/citizenship papers.

On the grandparent thread I will represent the wops with an education - and arrogance! Sorry, it's a rough day at work...

you guys are all wrong! "wop" or "wap" came from the sound italians made when thrown against a wall.

Slurs The interesting about this board is anyone of non European Anglo decent consistantly labels anyone of European Anglo decent as racists. In this post even the Spanish Europeans of Spain are racists.
In any third world country their people are just being nationalistic so they say, while in any first world country anglo european people are simply racists the third world says. If the third world countries and their peoples had their own act together, the massive immigration would be in the reverse.

it is truly a sad state of affairs when one of such esteemed position within society deems it acceptable to label others with such words.

It is a correct observation that anybody who ísn´t liked by anybody else (for what reason ever) is labelled a racist in Europe.

I don´t care for it any longer.

You mean just because I don't have any friends I will be labeled a racist in Europe?

you cannot do this in Belgium ! If you call someone something like that in Belgium and the fellow goes to court with his disagreement + eye witnesses, you get fined and could loose civil rights!!

In Belgium? Creamontop, do you mean if someone punches someone else they get fined and loose civil rights? I hope so. It's hard to imagine a place where people can just go around beating the hell outa other people.

But, if you mean in Belgium you can get fined and LOOSE CIVIL RIGHTS because of offensive words... Geez.... What a sad and way too Orwellian place to live. People should be able to think what they like and say what they think without fear of the government policing their words. If someone doesn't like what someone else says, then they can give them a few choice words of their own. Sometimes the solution to offensive speech is more speech.

Sorry this is a bit off topic, as Belgium isn't Colombia. I hope, at least, those guys had some penalty for punching those Colombianas. But, Colombianas or not, what kind of men go around pounding women with their fists?

You do brag dude, but at times, you post a few good things; but in the big picture, you seem to portray the gringo that I avoid like the avion flu when I am in Colombia.

I read your posts so I can avoid coming off like you.

Been a while Since I actually read a thread on PBH. Yep, same stupidity, same misogyny, same disgusting comments about Colombian women, there are posters here who have actually succeeded at making what was originally a good webpage into an racist trashpit.

Thanks guys morphus, You seem to lack the ability to qualify your statements as jokes, and your comment about my lack of a sense of humor makes me shit in my pants; your posts make me laugh my ass off!

I get the jokes and I read the threads start to finish.

pax vobiscum Racism is a self degenerating form of envy and/or resentment, it is incorrectly justified by the more moronic people who see anyone with something that they do not have. If the other person is of a different race, the colour is of no consequence, then that justifies their resentment even more.

In its modern form, racism evolved in tandem with European exploration and conquest of much of the rest of the world, and especially after Christopher Columbus reached the Americas.

As new peoples were encountered, fought, and ultimately subdued, theories about "race" began to develop, and these helped many to justify the differences in position and treatment of people whom they categorized as belonging to different and usually inferior races.

Just like this forum, it starts with a single word in some cases, that evolves into a heated sentence, argument, smack, fight, shot and the chain has started.

Every war in the world has started because someone wanted something that someone else had. Mr A Schicklegruber springs to mind, etc, etc.

I shall say this once more, this is the ‘friendly talkzone' If you cannot keep a civil tongue in your head then you should turn the page.

Incidently; the need to resort to expletives and anger simply shows that you have lost the plot, and is a show of particularly low intelligence.

However I remain sirs, your most obedient servant.

Pax vobiscum.
