Javier Bardem is out…

Venezuelan actor Edgar Ramirez is now Pablo Escobar.

Joe Carnahan’s "Killing Pablo" is scheduled to begin filming in the fall.

Joe Carnahan says, "I spent the last week in Colombia with Edgar Ramirez talking 'Killing Pablo' and he has every intention of portraying Escobar and I couldn't be more fired up by the prospect. He's coming at it with boundless enthusiasm, conviction to the role and the understanding that he's going to have to pack on anywhere from 35 to 40lbs."

It looks like Joe Carnahan was in Medellin for the Feria de las Flores.

"We spent the day in the barrio that Pablo built for the poor of Medellin who prior to
that, were living in a landfill. You can't imagine the disparity between the people in
Medellin and Bogota when it comes to Escobar. It is Love/Hate writ large. To the people
that live in this neighborhood, he is the true patron saint. An old women I talked with
got misty at the mention of his name and said how wonderful he was and how much
he helped out the tens of thousands of poor in Medellin...But in Bogota, that largesse
gets written off as a powerful man, manipulating those in need. He had what they refer
to as 'Assassin Schools' where he was recruiting poor, desperate young men and turning
them into 'sicarios' (hired killers) Often times, these kids were sent in on 'one way' missions,
never to return: Their families were compensated accordingly."

"That kid's eyes are something, aren't they? I don't know what they're conveying, maybe
nothing more than 'Gringo, what the f*ck, are you doing here?' But whatever it is, it's

Lisa Zee says, "What is frying there!?.................. guacala!!!.... disgusting. No wonder you got sick!"

Chicaron...

I actually got sick five days prior to the marranadas. Also heard from several other travellers that they too got sick on this trip, so it had nothing to do with me eating barrio food, which I initially thought to be the culprit.

---

I did spend a lot of time on this trip exploring El Poblado and Parque Lleras. It took a few days but I walked up and the down, criss-crossing the streets in Parque Lleras, exploring the many interesting boutiques and small shops as I "interviewed" many shop owners who all turned out to be great people to know.

It was during these walks that I noticed there were several empty commerical spaces on almost every block surrounding Parqe Lleras. This was my first trip where I spent more time in Parque Lleras instead of the barrios, mainly do to my illness and not wanting to be stuck up in the hillside barrio's bathrooms, but that's another story for another day. Let me say that Parque Lleras is defintiely an interesting place to people watch on almost any given day, moreso on Wed - Sat nights when the streets are busy with people out celebrating.

On one of my walks, I discovered a very interesting "scene" outside of "ground zero" in Parque Lleras, something I've never seen before, probably because I spent too much time at my friends Cuban restuarant as well as Licolleras, drinking.

I kept thinking about this "scene" for the next few days, then one day as I was walking around Parque Lleras I found myself thinking "what is missing in this area?" something that would attract tourists, expats, and locals alike, there has to be something....

Then it hit me, a lightbulb went off, and the wheels in my head started turning, and that is when I came up with the idea of a "Mexican restaurant" with a strong theme, something more than just a restuarant because there are already many restaurants in the area, it had to be something completely outside of the box.

I continued to think about this idea for a few days before I decided to pitch the idea to a few people in Medellin; a paisa, local gringo business owner, expat, and a gringo tourist. All liked the idea and were very supportive, something that actually surprised me, but than again, many on PBH had previously expressed their issues and concerns about food, restaurants, and places to visit while in Medellin. I guess that was always on the back of my mind as I zig-zagged through Parque Lleras.

As I continued thinking about the idea, I came to the conclusion that the "Mexican restaurant" would have to be located in Parque Lleras for it to have any chance at being successful, especially for the specific market we would target. It's time for me to spend more time in El Poblado on future trips...

After thinking about it some more, I came to the conclusion that this is something that I would actually enjoy working at full-time, allowing it to cosume my time, but don't expect it to suck the life out of me, because otherwise I wouldn't bother making the attempt.

I don't know if it will work, but I feel very strongly about making the attempt at developing the idea, which would be sometime in the near future, no rush.

For now, I continue to dream...

also, do mass at la divina eucaristia up the creek from cinco puertos. our old church. there's some old poblado up there.

too, have one of the taxistas show you la cola del zorro. that used to be the most dangerous place outside of bello.

that whole area up towards las palmas and south towards envigado, is old guard. you'll love it and get a feel for the area as it was and is, in it's root.;

i'm glad you're there to enjoy it for me.

CAPT.
In respect to the Pablo Building..I was told by a Police Captain that in fact the building did belong to Pablo Escobar along with many other things naturally. Toward the end of his reign when the Cali boys were in Med kicking ass they did blow a hole or 2 in the building. The place has sat empty for years now aside from vandals from time to time. It has now been bought by a private sector and it keeps getting vandalized in memory of Pablo. The police seem to think it is family members of those that lost souls to Pablo's reign. hence you have the trying to convince people to leave the building alone. The sign is a ruse attempt. But those that were around 1990 and later know the truth.

Hope this helps. Peace..
oh TJ can probably shed much more light on this since he was related to Pablo...(illegitimate red headed step son)

so, as usual,... it depends who is feeding you from their hand or not: Escobar:Medellin vs Escobar: Bogota.

Why Not Colombia?..........Stay Tuned, for more.... utterly worthless, self-indulgent gobbets of nonsense.
