skype is expensive to call colombia

I use skype to call the usa from colombia and it only costs .021 cents a minute and works great but now that I'm in the u.s. calling colombia with skype is .099 cents per minute which is so much more expensive. It doesn't make sense to me. Anybody know of good cheap calling cards? A monthly plan won't work for me because I'm only in the u.s. for christmas.

voipstunt works well for us you have to buy credits which are good for 3 months then all calls to us and us mobils are free as long as you still have credits calls to colombia are 3 to 4 cents a minute an to call mobils in colombia its 10 cents a minute my wife calls alot it runs us about 15 dollars every 2 weeks

rmorgan3 says on Dec 19, 2007, 09:10:

yes free but only to call other computers you can do the same with yahoos messenger as well as msn voipstunt is for calling landline or cells

Check out www.cloncom.com

You can recharge the card online. In fact, I set mine to recharge automatically (it adds $10). It also automatically detects that it is me calling, so I don't need to enter a PIN. My cards are typically 5 cents/minute to Medellin from the U.S.

Depending on the Colombian city that you are calling, Yahoo Messenger charges from 3.9 cents a minute for land lines, up to 10.9 cents a minute for mobile phones. The rates are listed here - http://voice.yahoo.com/

rmorgan3 says on Dec 19, 2007, 10:29:

yahoo and msn messengers are free like skype to call other computers vonage has a latin american package now that for 35 per month you can call all you want but not cells

Look for a calling card called THE RED CARD, the connection is usually very clear and when I was in the states, I could talk for about an hour with a $5.00 card

voipstunt seems to be the best. Their rate is about 3 cents a minute for landlines. Yahoo voice is almost 7 cents a minute for medellin. Some of the calling cards were as low as 3 cents a minute but with 3 or 4 minute rounding and also buying like 500 minutes at a time. I doubt I will use that many minutes.

Thanks for the info. I'll probably go with voipstunt since I don't even have a landline here in the u.s. to call from. My brothers don't have landlines at their houses, only cell phones.

Ideally it would be best to call my wife's computer but she doesn't have one. (I took the laptop with me) Vonage wouldn't work because I'm only in the u.s. until dec. 29th.

I have both Skype and VoipStunt, the reason being that both have days that they work well, bad or in between. Does anyone have these same issues? I don't believe the problem is with my computer, since a lot of the time the quality is crystal clear whereas some of the time (the past week for example) I can hear the other party just fine but they can't hear me at all, so then I end up using traditional phones and paying about 4-5x the fee. And yes, generally speaking VoipStunt is cheaper than Skype.

we only use voipstunt for phone calls to colombia my wife calls pretty much everyday to her mom havent had much trouble we have verizon fios at 20mb
once in awhile have trouble connecting but not often have used it for over a year

Just for the Holidays???...."calling colombia with skype is .099 cents per minute." I think could deal with that nickel and dime....

I'am livin' easy, eatin' poke chops greasy! "Reality is overated."

mranderson says on Dec 19, 2007, 15:48:

I'm sure you can deal with it but I honestly don't have a lot of money. 3 cents a minute compared to 10 cents is a big difference, not just nickels and dimes. I'm going to be calling my wife everyday and depending on how long we talk I'll probably save $15 to $20. That's definately worth using another program for.

Try the calling card at zaptel.com. I believe it is 4.9 cents per minute from US to Colombia. Buy a card for $10 online and evaluate it. I have used it for other countries as well and happy with service

rmorgan3 says on Dec 20, 2007, 03:11:

the bad thing about calling card you use them 1 time and think you have more time left and you dont connecting charges eat up all the time

aztec says on Dec 20, 2007, 03:47:

The home page of Skype reports a charge to Bogotá of $0.051 excluding VAT and $0.059 including VAT. If that is incorrect we need to call them on it.

bhill says on Dec 20, 2007, 07:44:

VBUZZER offers cheaper rates than Skype to Colombia, and it works pretty good.
www.vbuzzer.com

$0.021 to Bogota
$0.030 to Medellin

mranderson says on Dec 20, 2007, 08:04:

I downloaded voipstunt. Used it last night and it worked pretty good. Actually my wife's voice sounded more "normal" with voipstunt, with skype she sounded like another person although it still gave me a good connection. What I didn't realize is voipstunt is apparently in euros and eurocents? I wonder if I can change the currency to dollars.

sloopskipper says on Dec 20, 2007, 15:47:

I haven't tried this:

http://www.12voip.com/en/whatis12voip.html

THEY say:

Yes we do offer a FREE service, but to keep it this way there are some rules;
Before you buy credit we allow you to test our service to various popular destinations for FREE.
There is one limitation;
- you can call a maximum of 60 minutes.

After having bought your credit you can call our FREE destinations for 4 months! IMAGINE... FOR JUST 2,50 EURO PER MONTH!

To avoid abuse we set the rules:
- you can call up to 300 minutes per week to a FREE destination.
- when you run out of FREE days (the 4 months) the normal rate will be charged for these destinations. But of course you can buy new credit and you will get another 4 months of FREE calling.
- of course you can use your credit to call destinations which are not FREE, but still very cheap

Hi!

I use 12Voip.com to call Cali landline telephones. After the 300 minutes a week, they charge .01 Euros to call a minute. Still a deal!

12Voip is a great deal. Can I get a local Bogota number for an inbound number that rings here in Georgia? Calling Bogota is no problem its when my wife calls me that I am trying to solve.
