The FARC has been battered by President Alvaro Uribe's U.S.-backed military campaign, but guerrillas are still active in areas where state presence is weak. Rebels often stop and burn buses and trucks as a form of intimidation.

Police said there were about 20 passengers on the bus.

"A group, apparently from the FARC, stopped a bus and set fire to it. The details and circumstances of why they burned it with people inside, we still do not know," Narino State Governor Antonio Navarro told reporters.

"Six burned bodies were found, four adults and two children," he said.

Colombia's four-decade-old conflict has eased since Uribe came to office in 2002 and sent troops to retake areas once under control of illegal armed groups. The FARC has been weakened by the loss of top commanders and by desertions, but is still fighting in remote, rural regions.

One of the bus passengers who survived the attack, Maria Garcia, told local media guerrillas opened fire on the vehicle, which later burst into flames. She did not say how the fire started.

"Gunfire started and we got down," she said. "I grabbed my two kids and ran out and the bus began to burn."

Barbaric. how does the FARC justify this? what political statement are they trying to make. Why don't Colombians institute the death penalty. most Colombians I talk to are for it.

Doesn't seem to be a great way to impress the locals--those who the FARC rely upon for protection and support.

Dolfi
what is when they had done this? You are very close to them and you understand how they are thinking, so what do they think when they are burning live people and children in a bus?

S9o for the OEA it was enough to gave their opinion about this. So, you are a person who understands terrorists, so please explain us what`s the goal with this?

Darn I just made a similar post to this. Farc was so quiet now for years under Uribe. So now will we here of roadblocks coming down from Pasto to the border or Popoayn down to the border. Again will we have to shiver and pray if nightfall is coming when taking a bus from Bogota To Medellin? Remember like in 2001 of the famous biker Striker who got kidnapped by Farc on his bike at like 6.30 at night like maybe half an hour before Rio Negro? This many years of Uribe with Mano Duro was too good to be true. I guess next the route here from Bucaramnga or Cucuta will be deeemed unsafe. Just when many more routes were getting safe to travel on bam this hapeens. I guess Uribe is more worried about the stupid US Military Bases and Drogas then this. Now I want to go to Peru by bus I have no money on the plane. Post Back I am worried now.,
