I went through a police check point there at about 5:00 in the morning riding a bus from Bogota to Barranquilla. They cleared the bus of all men and proceeded to check us out. I however, being a pasty white type of gringo, was treated like something between an extraterrestrial and being invisible. I tried to get them to look at my passport etc. My Spanish is quite good and I am sure they definitely knew what I was saying. The most I got was one of them just smiling at me briefly. At that point I did not care what they wanted by that time, I wanted that torturous trip to end soon. Probably not much help to you, but related to the thread at any rate.

I've been there for a day and only met happy helpfull people. I didn't stay there, it is a big place and is bound to have a hotel to your standard.
