SImple Question

My fiance has his appointment with the Embassy next Tuesday the 14th and he was planning on leaving that same weekend. However we were looking at plane tickets and I was hoping to buy just a one way ticket. Since I have been back and forth between Colombia and the US many times, I know that there are certain restrictions. Or, could I buy a roundtrip ticket with the first leg startig in the US and then my fiance could just use the last leg of the trip (Say Miami-Bogota, Bogota-Miami) and he would just use the Bogota-Miami part. The reason I ask is because the flights are cheaper when they originate in the US. Or if I could just buy a one-way since he will have his visa (K-1) for entry into the US. Any thoughts?

You can buy either He can come here on a one way ticket or a two way ticket - buy what is cheapest and use it. I used a one way ticked for my fiancee as one way was cheaper from Barranquilla (to Miami.) You may want to check with someone in the airlines on using just the second leg of a ticket - it used to be OK prior to 9-11 and I did it once, but I don't know now. Good luck

You can buy one way. I picked up the telephone and called Avianca and American here in Bogotá this morning.

1. If you have a TOURIST visa you must have a round trip ticket before you are allowed to board the aircraft.

2. If you have a visa such as a K, F, etc. you may travel on a one-way ticket.

Have you fiance call Avancia to make sure and also check on what is the best fare RT or one way. I think you will find RT cheaper but you are really pushing the envelope to get a good fare. Less than 21 days advance and the price jumps.. The office we usually use is in Chicó, 6112681

. I am bringing my fiance to the US also in 2 weeks. I called travelocity and heres what they told me...I was going to buy 2 one way tickets from the US to Barranquilla and back. They said if she isn't coming on the first leg (US to Barranquilla) then they would cancel her portion of the ticket. She had to start the trip with me for the ticket to be valid. If your fiance doesn't use the first leg of the trip...I am almost postive he cannot use just the return portion of the roundtrip.
What I did....I bought a roundtrip for me (since I'm going over there) and I am only using the the first leg and then the return portion into Miami. I bought her a one way from Barranquilla to Miami, then I bought both of us a one way from Miami to my home city, so we could be sure and be on the same flight and sitting next to each other. (I had to eat the second portion of my roundtrip from Miami to my home city.) I had to spend an extra $200 this way, but we are on the same flights into Miami and then into my home city.

The way I understand it....you cannot change the names on the tickets and the person must use the ticket at the start of the trip or the return portion will be canceled.
Yes, If he has a k1-visa...he can buy a one-way into the US, he doesn't need a roundtrip.

Short Notice = Few Options I lucked out, I guess. When I bought my fiance's tickets it was cheaper to get one-way tickets than round-trip. She didn't have any problem using them.

I met her in Miami, so I bought a round-trip from Seattle to Orlando for me and one-way tickets from Orlando to Seattle for her and her daughter. (I drove to Miami for those trying to connect the dots) Cali to Miami one-way wasn't a problem on Avianca, either. So, it all worked out (and we got to visit with her family in Florida).

The trick, however, is to keep shopping for tickets as the price and seat availability can change over night. I can't count the times I've been bummed about the price one week only to see a killer deal the next. The key is to keep shopping and have your credit card ready for when the bargains appear because they disappear quickly as well.

I agree with crazy Keep checking the prices. I had found a reasonable fare for her from Barranquilla to Miami but the local travel agent gave her a better price and worked with me to get it charged on my credit card also! Like crazy, I tried several scenarios - tickets to Orlando instead of Miami first, then I flew to Miami picked her up, we drove to Cape Coral and then to Orlando - spent a week there then drove to Miami and flew together to Denver - Since I bought her Miami-Denver ticket here through American, I could assign her the seat next to mine! Good Luck

Thanks Once Again Thanks Everyone. I'm cutting it close with the time frame, but I want to make sure that everything goes well with his visa appointment before spending the money on a ticket. I'm sure I'll be in touch on Tuesday and let everyone know what happened. Thanks!
