Sickened with insecure colombians

Whenever someone finds out I was raised in the US, I get the customary "O yeah, my son has visited all of europe. And knows five languages. What now?" Only to hear a scarface-like accent from the said pseudo-elite. And I say who cares? Or the constant attacks on gringos, "Yeah they're so cold, they are so stupid too." "They're so fat, I bet you ate hamburgers everyday." "They don't know how to appreciate life, just work, work, work."

The truly sad thing is that all the comments above now describe colombians, except the hamburger comment. Kids (and I say kids because they are) enter the university, get a diploma and start working just to become lemmings in society. They only care about money, and if they can somehow bring down gringos in their eyes they'll do it in a heartbeat.

There is a disease in Bogota from some of the people that I've met, and all they care about is climbing the social ladder. I guess this exists everywhere, it's simply nature at work, but I find the concept of strata and the current condition of colombia making it much worse. I really love some things in colombia, "rich" colombians aren't a part of that.

This post is different then what I've experienced Whenever someone finds out I was raised in the US, I get the customary "O yeah, my son has visited all of europe.

Funny, I’ve been in Colombia for years and haven’t heard any of these comments. I’m the only American living in this rural area and at a minimum my GF or her large extended family would have at least mentioned this being said or thought. My GF has lived all her life within 20 miles of the town and her family for what 100 years? I’ve asked the question “Have any North Americans EVER lived in this town? and the answer was no.

This leads me to believe you are in fact, a rich American or derivative with an attitude. You must be living like or at least in close proximation to someone who reinforces your opinions.

My limited experience was with educational professionals in their 50’s that had the resources to travel to Spain, Florida and Texas !!! We looked through their photo albums,, Madrid, Disneyland and amazingly enough their visit to the Alamo in San Antonio.

Never once did I get the impression this was anything more than a once in a life time experience that produced anything more than fond memories they were sharing with an American. It was impressive to see two individuals who had worked hard all their life and against huge obstacles to acquire the wealth to have a good time. Rich? Would this include a tenured college professor and his wife who retired from a K12 teaching job after 20 years.

Gosh,, maybe it was easy and they didn’t need to work hard to enjoy their later years?

Don't worry about it. The best thing to do is go to Colombia and get drunk. Party with some chicas and you won't care whats going on in Colombian society. It works for me.

Someone with shared experiences Dtapia,
it is actually quite comforting to see that someone has experienced the same attitudes and can relate to the arrogance that these "pseudo-elite" have when encountered with someone who can test their status-quo. I too, was born in the U.S. and dearly love Colombia and when I have traveled in the past and met some of "these people" they never fail to amaze me. The ignorance that these people, mostly found in the higher-status sectors in the cities posses is astonishing.
