One of... ...the advantages that helps here is the section on Politics & the War. Comments about Republicans and Democrats as related to Colombia tend to be contensious and this section provides an outlet.

Also some people cannot resist saying something negative about Bush and his VP. Here they can spout off their opinions about how bad the U.S. is under the Republicans and Bush without offending the 50% in the US who would disagree.

For me I tend to not read the Politics & the War section because it is so irritating.

Hopefully we can keep it civil...but i think at the minimum, each side of the political PC spectrum will be informed a little more with regards to how other PBH people feel....i really dont expect to convince anyone here on PBH to change their positions, as i know that i dont think anyone here will change mine. But, in the interest of polite conversation and discussion, lets keep the attitudes in check and discuss it in an open fashion while realizing that PBH users are just about as diverse in persectives as the real world...It takes all kinds to make the world real, so to speak. =)

To start off, i am inclined to believe that if a person reads a thread and and voluntarily participates in it, they should expect to find opposing and similar views. And, if something is found to be offensive to them, the option is not to continue reading or participating in the discussion. Lets face it, with so many perspectives out there, and varying degrees of sensitivity, someone will always find something objectionable, right?

Just my opinion...

I agree with Aztec, as i think that if someone wants to bash the US, Bush, Dems/Rep, then a political forum on US politics is the appropriate forum, and lord knows there are plenty of those...but this is a Colombian forum..and i may be wrong, but i thought the original purpose of the site was to promote the good things about Colombia culture, not just another Bash site...what bothers me is the ones similiar to the "Who has the biggest d!ck type posts, the US or Colombia? Gringos or Latinos" (I was going to include Male/Female entry but the verbiage doesnt jive, but i think you get the point. a bad pun, sorry)but i dont think those will ever "come" to a conclusion, so to speak. (pardon the other pun....=(....and first time posters should research their questions first prior to reigniting old posts that were controversial and put to rest for good reason..



Just my opinion...

without reading any of the posts below the OP,... my first thought was that 'politically correct' is something different from 'reasonable', or 'respectable,...repectful',... 'in good taste'... Political Correctness is not one of The Virtues. Respect, on the other hand, is. Political Correctness is more of a "liberal's terminology"...utilized to hide reality. Respect is well, just that. Respectable, irregardless of what side you are on.

my view on political correctness.... for me, political correctness is a misues of the language. examples are: using appropriate, when the word correct would be more accurate, and concepts of diversity being a goal to be achieved, rather than the fact that diversity has always been something that has been around us. another example of pc run amok, is the use of hyphenated amerian, in the idea of creating diversity, but the end effect is to further divide people into sub-groups. another example, is the misuse of language to make somethnig in it's, to delicate ears and sensitivities, harsh original language more palatable. one example, and not to single them out, is to not say that one is homosexual, bur rather that one is gay. an extreme example of this would be the referall of people sent to be exterminated as being sent for special treatment. special, warm and fuzzy labels for the less than pleasant, but more accurate words.

as far as being used in an international forum such as this, one must remember that when you are in the house of another, you must abide by the rules of the owner of the house. since the phenomenon of pc has been an american creation, it would not serve to impose such restrictions on language in an open, international forum such as this, and not lecture others who may or may not offend the delicate tendencies of others. one must however be mindful of the sensitivities of others, and not needlessly go out of the way to intentionally insult others. on the other hand, what one considers an insult, may very well not be an unsult to others. one must tread with caution, but not to the point of timidity. with that said, i retire to my corner, to contemplate what area of my life that my wife has reorganized. =)

Congress shall pass no law.... Galecito, remember, the 1st Amendment refers to no government censorship. Private folks can place limits on free speech on their own websites. As far as the jurisdiction question, most countries punt on tackling/enforcing this issue, but potentially any country where the forum is read, where the servers are that host the site, or anyplace with a sufficient connection could make a claim at having jurisdiction. Look at the gambling sites in Costa Rica whose corporate officers were arrested in the US on gambling charges.

Back to the threads main point, if you start limiting peoples posts too much, regardless if its "right" or "wrong" you will end up with a bunch of people who agree on the same stuff , the site will get boring, and probably die. Plus, the un-PC stuff seems to have a great following (just look at the response to any of the funny stuff elmo posts).
