Should I keep Working After I Retire?

Ok fellows ,this is getting interesting now, as I said in my previous post I will be clearing $3000 beans, some how an old buddy of mine knew about my soon to be retirement, and offered me a job in Colombia , should I accept it ? I acually was not thinking of working another hour , but this is getting to be very interesting. And the job will be in the coastal part of Colombia.hmmmm how about the heat :)!!!!

Now for argument sake , let us say I will get spoiled in Colombia and decide to live in luxury , perhaps I should accept the offer!!! hmmm, what about if I just chill and be content with the $3000 a month and live like an average Colombian!!!! .

and by the way , I have no idea what the job offer is , he told me when I go down there we'll talk about it. I know what u thinking :) is not that , it is a legit business.

Yup...Average Colombians live on $3000 a month. You'll be a pauper in Colombia with that amount. The American dollar is going to be worth ZERO in Colombia and elsewhere within the next couple of years. Back in the US, trading posts will re-emerge to obtain goods using furs, gold, silver, ect as currency.

It depends on what activities that you like. A lot of nightlife and prepagos will take a bite out of that 3K.

Prepagos? Nobody on PBH is interested in that sort of thing.

Some people even with ample money decide they can't hack the retired lifestlye. I don't think I would be one of them however.

The heat that bad in Cartagena?? Wasn't that bad esp. compared to Miami and esp. Hounton, TX.

Maybe you could ask/state that you only work 20 hrs./wk. or so. A lot of retirees do that.

I wish I can be as adventerous as you. I don't see my self retiring - just starting a second career I enjoy doing like teaching in a college. This would allow me to travel extensively with my wife since the kids will be well on their own. During down times, we'll just be beach bums and invite friends and family over. Also, When it's time for me to leave this world, I'd rather have my boots on and be in my riding saddle.

Anyway, back to your question: you don't offer enough information. What kind of job and how much does it pay? Is it similar to the one you had or is it competely different? How many hours per week? Is it a labor intensive job? We need more information for a proper cost-benefit analysis. I lean towards "Go for it!," but that's because I just told you I don't plan on retiring, just making room for more play time after I'm done with my first career.

Although you would be living very nicely, it couldn't hurt to have a good job here. Who would want to waste away on the coastal beaches with nothing to do for the rest of their life?!?!?!? Get out, make contacts, be in business, and most importantly make the Colombian Peso because that 3k USD might not go so far in the future!

Hmmmm.....He wants you to accept a job offer without your knowing what you're going to do? You don't know if it's a high stress job (most retirees wouldn't want a stressful job) or if it's a job you'll be bored with (equally bad)?

If your buddy will allow you to quit without warning if you hate the job, then there's nothing to lose and I say go for it. But if you can't easily quit, I agree with Plato and you should first ask about the job before agreeing to working.

If I worked after retirement, I would want to either:

(1) Teach English in Colombia, or
(2) Work at Edwin Watts or Nevada Bob's golf shop if I stay in North America.

No Job Dude. You're retired. And don't retire in Bogota please. Bogota = hustle and bustle. Coast. Maybe Santa Marta or somewhere in between Cartagena and Baranquilla. Maybe a place in the mountains away from it all. You have the opportunity to live the dream. Don't entertain the vague job.

dwr..........In Colombia, teaching English might be fun, not so much for the money, but for something to do, provided you can be lucky enough to have students who really want to learn.

I agree with you about Bogota though. It has actually become a decent place to visit, but, for a place to live, I would take Armenia and/or Calarca over Bogota any time.
