Shorts in latin america. Why not?

Why do they wear pants everywhere down there? Ive noticed and been told this is the norm in alot of latin america, regardless of the temperature.

I dont know why latin americans cant wear shorts and flip flops like the backpackers sometimes. Dont they see the comfort value? Im not trying to be ethnocentric, but I doubt swamp ass is something anyone feels cultural pride over.

I wonder the same myself. That is my usual daytime attire and that gets askance glances. That is what I always wear in Florida because it is so hot, and I didn't feel the need to buy a bunch of pants to placate some people who I don't even know.

I ask him not to, but he would get upset, even though they were very nice like looking shorts, and nice sandals,( not that he bought them with his taste, LOL, I went shopping for him before we went, with his money of course).

And one day of their lives everyone should realize trying too hard to impress others is just a symptom of low self esteem. You shouldnt self seek in others and try to find some logical reason you are a good person i.e. Im seen wearing a suit so I must be successful. As many suits as Ive worn it just means you are a slave or a con artist anyways.

Come on Elmodefoque, you and I know that that last image is NOT Colombian. Just look at the recently made hats. ...just tell us; is it New Mexico or Texas???

As for the "Ponchos," they are called Ruanas, and if you study the images of the past when more people wore those beautiful Ruanas in Colombia, you will discover that the men had clean, well-tailored suits, and the ladies, beautiful often-time fashionable attire, just like today.

I have attended fashion shows in Bogota and Paris since I was a tot (my mom was a fashion diva, and ex-model), and I know that Colombian's penchant for high-fashion has always existed, even for the workign class. It is no wonder that fashion shows in Milan and Paris are using more and more Colombian talent and/or iconography every year.

Heck, did you happen to see the Colombian hats Gauliter preiered this year in hi Summer '09 collection?

Flip flops are ok if your house has a dirt floor but I don't get them. When I travel, I make sure I pcak light enough so that I am ready to sprint for a mile. Flip flops are part of that - I hate them.

The funniest thing I saw was a girl walking in the rain with an umbrella and flip flops. They flipped up the water and it flopped all over her legs.

My Colombia wife gets me to buy nice pants and shirts with long sleaves from time to time. She will have to wait for the documents to go through before she gets to see me wear them. I keep looking for lighter, cooler shirts.

I was introduced to them,,,As Colombians,,,

On Sept 17, 2008: Senator John McCain said, as he had many times before, that he believed the fundamentals of the economy were "strong."Hours later he backpedaled, explaining that he had meant that American workers were Strong.

Papi de Alejo says on Oct 12, 2008, 11:56:

As someone who grew up in a different climate, I understand that people wear what they are accustomed to wear. Take for example, when I go to the office it's always in buttoned down shirt with a tie. Even if it's 100 degrees outside. But that's the "uniform".

In the West Indies, with the obvious exception of Bermuda, only small boys wear shorts as everyday wear. And those small boys yearn to be wearing long pants one day. So when Americans show up wearing shorts and sandals, it is in many instances taken as an offence that they don't take the time to properly dress themselves.

I also understand that climate has a role in this equation. When I lived in Buffalo and we only had three days of summer, any chance to wear less than we did during the brutal winter was taken. You would literally see people shirtless and in shorts on cool Spring days. Didn't want to miss the 3 days of Summer.

I refer you guys to the song "Gentleman" by Fela Kuti. It talks about the stupidity of dressing in a way that's not appropriate for the climate.

To understand Colombian dress code first you have to study the racial make up of each region.
Growing up in the Caribbean coast I always picture cities in the interior exactly like this recent picture below. They continue to have strong Andean injun influence AS YOU COULD WELL SEE which is very conservative, solemn soft spoken and shy, so shorts is outta the fokin question.
Wearing shorts In Bogotá, being the most native of all, will get you nasty stares from locals including a non local like me, but my reaction has nothing to do with traditions only wondering why would any modefoque wear short in such nasty cold ugly weather.

Barranquilla being the most racially diverse city with zero injun influence does not really care whether a modefoque wears shorts or not
Most choose to wear long pants due to machismo and others to hide their skinny ashy hairy legs, no matter how fokin hot it gets.
Chit, now that I think about it, in almost 70 years both living and visiting Barranquilla , I’ve never seen ONE damn INJUN.

As a matter of fact, I thought of you today Elmo. I was at T-Mobile paying my bill, and the guy working was dark complected, wore a Colombian flag colored woven bracelet, and spoke a wierd dialect of Spanish to some Mexican customers. I asked him where he was from, and he said he was from Tumaco (sp?). Anyway, he is Wayuu too.

In very hot places like Neiva and elsewhere in Southern Colombia, you won't get such crazy looks for wearing shorts, but most guys still do wear long pants, albeit with short sleeve button down shirts(the kind copier/printer repairmen wear in the US). However, the women in these areas frequently wear tiny, incredibly tight little shorts and spaghetti strap tops. If you like "toe", then you'd love Southern Colombia.

A few weeks ago, I took my Southern Colombian wife to the mall and she bought about ten pairs of shorts. I warned her that it will be getting cool soon around here, but she didn't care. Luckily for me, pretty much all shorts are now on the end of season clearance racks so she didn't pay more than $10-15 for most. However, she looks so good in them, I'm not complaining.

A few years ago, I was at a hotel on Calle 100 with my then girlfriend. I needed something urgently from the Olimpica down the street, but didn't feel like getting dressed so I just walked out in the shorts and t-shirt I was already wearing along with some tennis shoes. It was the middle of a weekday and this is a business district. Consequently, most people are dressed in business suits. Everyone on the street gave me very crazy looks. I actually had a few guys whistle and laugh at me. Oh well, it was worth it.

It's a cultural thing. It's done this way all across Latin America and the Caribbean. It existed way before gringos started going there. It will exist after. They believe that men should dress like adults, and short pants when not at the beach, diminishes that. Supposedly, you are taken more seriously by the way you dress. I call BS, but whatever. Therefore, in the interior cities (Bogota, Medellin, Cali, etc.), this is how they usually dress. On the coast, on the weekends, it's more relaxed. If you want to respect the culture, fine. If you don't, fine.

It's generally applied to older men (30 yrs old). The younger generation have different rules and no one really holds them to that standard.

If you're just on vacation, and like me, don't really care what people think, dress as you wish. That being said, I never dress like a bum. Even in shorts, it's done tastefully.
