the first photo is right across from Oviedo Mall where they are building the new library. I have been here 5 months and although I see people in sandals and shorts from time to time, it is not the norm. Most people here (locals) wear long pants and dress shoes (or sneakers).

my glass is getting shorter on whiskey, ice and water...

Ctg Bound says on Aug 15, 2006, 12:43:

tejasmarcos I would tend to agree with tejasmarcos, although on a Saturday you will see a few more people about with shorts than on a weekday, quite a few more about with shorts on a Sunday and holidays, but still the vast majority will be in trousers and jeans.

gorgonabob says on Aug 15, 2006, 14:11:

you miss the fact that the people in the first photo are without doubt israeli backpackers staying at the casa jerusalem hostal two hundred metres away. these photos dont help the arguement that colombians wear shorts, kelvin..

Juanes says on Aug 15, 2006, 16:11:

I want the hairs on my legs to grow & breathe........ well i think its not too bad to wear shorts at all. i previously asked on other posting about whether it is ok to wear any sort of clothing with army references. I have heard stories on blog sites or people recounting their travels in south america, espeically colombia whereby they have been disadvantaged in a major way for wearing camouflage gear.

whats wrong with wearing them anyway as long as your not out at some fancy night club in latin america ? Come on after all, i have spent the last 10 years working in London, travelling on that damn tube every day wearing nothing but suits and formal clothing for work. so when i come to colomba and latin america i certainly am taking 5-6 pairs at least of the damn things. dont forget when us northern europeans or north americans from cold states go somewhere realtively hot ie, over 70 degrees, we always like to show off our piernes. i dont see anything wrong with this whether you are in bolivia, peru, brasil, colombia or argentina or mexico. There is no way im luggin around my rucksack through 13 countries wearing slacks all the time.

So as long as they are not worn with white socks and sandals (germans and holland people please read) there not that bad. Its not as if there are loads of gringos walking round in speedos or really tight shorts like the latinos wear when there on the beaches.

of course, i will attempt to blend in with the locals wherever i am but sometimes the comfort factor just comes first.....

There's no law against... wearing camo in Colombia, but you wouldn't want to be stopped in the countryside by an armed group , be they gov or irregulars, and be mistaken for an actor in a rival faction.

MACGRINGO skirt idea is not too bad u know hey mac, nice to see your comment about fashion. apparently , everyone is still trying to look really 1980's in london like punkish and mod stylie - wearing fred perry, pointy shoes, harrington jackets, retro sports wear and sometimes member only jackets !

i would think that wearing a skirt wudne be too bad for ya especially considering it is part of the national dress of scotland - the kilt.

mind you, you would get a few strange looks from the maricons esspecially if you were in cartagena i imagine.

nice to see you give it try and give us all some feedback though my scottish friend.

Well I didn't see too many Colombians in shorts - in Brranquilla Cartagena and Santa Marta on my recent visit (June/July 2006.) All my wife's family (brother, cousins, friends and even the 12 year old nephew wore pants almost all the time (except once when we went to the beach.) I wore shorts and sandals or flip flops to everywhere (even resturants and some parties.) My impression is that very few Colombians wear shorts - even in that 100+ weather without airconditioning - it was a little better in my shorts!

On a recet trip to Argentina, and Uruguay a few months ago, I wore a few of my Utilikilts (utilikilts.com) had a lot of fun with it, got a lot of good comments, and funny looks from the locals, not to mention a lot of people took photos of me. Guess its not something they see all the time down there. but a good way to have fun with the locals and be the center of attention.

Robert Jorge says on Aug 20, 2006, 14:48:

Shorts in Villavicencio I am from the US and have been living in Villavicencio for two months now. This town can get pretty hot. I am from Florida, so I am no stranger to heat. But in Florida, everything is airconditioned of course. Anyway, here is my take on the dress in Villavicencio, for whatever it is worth. The vast majority of guys here wear jeans, no matter what the weather. During the day, walking to the store, going to my fiancee's family's houses, I wear cargo shorts. Yes, the typical baggy, worn out looking, cargo shorts sold at places like Aeropostale in the US. My favorite pair is, dare I admit, camo too. I do not seem to get any extra attention from the locals. There are guys here who do wear shorts and flip flops; I am just saying the vast majority of men do not. The women who wear shorts are even more rare. There are lots of mini-skirts and jeans, but it is very uncommon to see a woman in shorts outside of her house. When I go out at night to a club, then I wear nice jeans and a polo shirt or a short sleeve button down. I doubt a club would let a guy in wearing cargo shorts. And if they did, you WOULD stand out.
By the way, has anybody here spent time in Villavicencio? I would love to talk about this town. The clubs are great. I met my fiancee (sort of) at Agua Pinelas on a Wednesday "ladies" night. Long story. Anyway, Kuarzo is also a favorite. All the little clubs in the Zona Rosa are fun too.
My favorite thing is trying out all the food. My favorites so far are the soups. I can't eat enough sopa de menaducia (spelled wrong I am sure, sorry) or sopa de mondongo. They are dirt cheap too for a large bowl. About $.60 to a $.80 US.

i gave up clothing trends about 3-4 years ago in the USA. however, after being here and hanging with a younger crowd, i have had to quickly get back into trendy jeans, cool euro style shoes and sporty shirts. atleast in MDE it is a very fashion conscious crowd moving and swinging. definitely wear what you want, but i prefer to blend for now. after i get more comfortable, i will probably begin bucking fashion trends once again. besides that, my girlfriend always starts politely bitchin when i don't get the look right. live and let live........

rocinante says on Aug 20, 2006, 17:31:

short hair shorts? Shorts are not common among the locals in MDE. I have about 200 photos from about 15 different events from Feria de Flores a few weeks ago and as a general rule in Medellin - 2 things you hardly see: Shorts and women under 40 with short hair. There are always exceptions so lets not split hairs.

Also wearing camo might be like wearing a Medellin jersey to a Nacional match. You're slightly asking for trouble unnecessarily. Not really worth it.

morph OK - I just read my Roconante email - dude I got there the Saturday the 28th (just after you did?). Did you get the aguardiente and empanadas, pancho and bag of goodies in Rio Negro airport? It was a party as soon as you stepped off the plane. I just got back Thursday, was doing a lot of work - every weekday except for Uribe's inauguration on the 7th - the day before my birthday. The highlight of the Feria festivities was Las Fondas (we went on the Sunday night after the parade). Had to be the highlight of anything in Medellin for me with the exception of the free Juanes concert on El San Juan last October.

I never check that account. Did you go to see that new movie that opened on the 11th? I don't remember what it was called but these military guys find all this money... The commercial runs on RCN every 10 miutes as I think RCN produced the film.

Where are you staying with some chica?

Again, sorry to have missed you there.

A couple of girls offered to let me stay with them so I can save money but Id rather stay alone. Sometimes I get bored of hanging out with 20 year old girls all day :)
