Shopping for food In Medellin

I went to Pomona and the 24 hrs Cucula (sp?) one day and I was shocked to see how EXPENSIVE food items are...

Now where do the poor but happy shop for grocery without paying an arm and a leg just to eat? Of course a place where you cam go to by taxi but still safe enough to go to...

First of all, buy your fruits and veggies in the street. I´m not sure where you are in the city, but in the Centro, you might try under the train tracks between Palacio de Cultura and Estación Prado (on the westside of the street there´s a decent fish market if you´re cool with buying fish in the street - I´ve never had any problems) or Ave. Oriental by Parque San Antionio. I usually buy meats in the grocery store though, seems a little cleaner than the local butchers. Generally, try to just buy the bare minimum in the grocery stores. If you feel energetic, yes, you can also go to plaza mayorista or minorista (depending on which is closer). They´re like enormous markets that sell everything. We always end up buying massive amounts of stuff there though and then you gotta fork over cash for the guy with the cart to help you wheel your goods around.
