Shoes

I will be traveling in Colombia for 3 weeks and do plan to spend 3 or 4 nights each in Bogota and Medellin. Are there any dress code requirements when going to Bars or Clubs in these cites? I'm definitely traveling with sandals. I will probably bring as a second pair some tennis shoes or light trekking shoes. But I'm trying to decide if I need to bring a good pair of going out shoes. Will the light trekkings shoes work for getting into bars and clubs?

shoes I always take one pair of tenni shoes and one pair of black or brown dress shoes. I seldom wear the dress shoes, tennis seem to be just fine for most occasions.

If you dont mind being identified as a "gringo tourist" then wear the Sandals. If a Colombiana invites you to a decent club they will not let you in wearing Sneakers. They will most likely approach you while you are standing in line and politely refuse you admittance:(

Gringo looking Arthur has a good suggestion. I know the first thing I did when coming to Colombia was purchase shoes and clothes here. I look gringo enough already, and did not want to stick out any more than I had to. On many other posts here, many have commented about not trying to stand out. And you can look at it also that if you dress way down you are only telling them you do not think enough of their country to dress correctly. Kind of like showing up at a wedding in blue jeans and a t-shirt. (Oh Lord and here come all the bloggers telling me that did just that)

To answer the question, most bars and many clubs are ok with jeans and tennis, some more "upscale" clubs will refuse you entry (just as in, say, England.)

Tennis shoes Most if not all bars are ok with Jeans, tennis shoes might be a problem in some.

Looking like a gringo I asked my 21 year old niece the other day,if she thought the shirt I was wearing made me look like a tourist. She said,No the shirts o.k....Its your face that makes you look like a tourist.
So much for trying to blend in!

I have ... ...noticed that very few Bogotanos wear white tennis shoes. Second trip I only took black ones. Even then I don't wear them out at night for dinner. Unless of course its only a hamburger.

What about a pair of black trainers/shoes. Like the designer ranges you get from Puma, Puma Blackstation. They are actually trainers but are pretty smartly designed and look more like shoes.

Something like this.
Sorted for all occasions. The price is pretty steep though.

Well... ... you are who you are but sandals at a club?? Sandals at a bar in Colombia?? Trying to blend in is not something you should worry about, but trying to dress up when you go out looks nicer, especially in Colombia. Sneakers are ok, I guess, but still.

Shoes in Colombia Never, never, never wear white running shoes in Colombia especially Bogota. I did and they were filthy in 3 days. The streets, fumes from buses, taxis and cars will turn those nice white runners in dirty looking running shoes in no time at all.

Also, you can pick up all kinds of shoes in Colombia if you don't want to pack allot coming here. If you wear your sandals here allot your feet will get very dirty fast!

If you plan on going to a nice disco you will have to wear dress shoes. Colombians love to dress up when they go clubbing in nice areas of Bogota.

If you don't mind sticking out like a sore thumb wear your running shoes and shorts and just be a good old tourist from Gringo Land. You can get away with this during the day but it is usually (not always) frowned upon by Colombians during the night and especially at high end restaurants and discos.

Enjoy your visit to wonderful Colombia

tennis I have been all over Colombia wearing tenni shoes, and everywhere I looked many other people were wearing them to.
I dont mind being labeled as a tourist at all...after all thats what I am. They can spot me a mile away with my blond hair, t-shirt, jeans and teni shoes.
If they dont like it for what ever reason...i dont give a damn, I wear what i want to wear and i try to dress comfortable not to please the locals.
If i go to the African jungle im not going to put on a piece of cloth to make the locals happy.
I am who i am..if they dont like it...who cares.

Peter is right Most major cities around the world are like that, London, paris new York, Bogota, wherever. There are places you can wear jeans and tenni shoes and there are other places where you should wear slacks a nice shirt and leather shoes.
90% of the places I visited in Bogota or Cali people were just dressed casual in jeans and tennis or something along that line. Now if you are talking about an upscale resturant or a wedding reception or something like that then its time to dress up a little.

Scotty That is exactly what we are talking about Scotty.... I dress comfortable too, often in running shoes. But if I am going out to nice places I dress accordingly. You don't have to be someone else here in Colombia. Just be yourself but use some common sense. For example, you WON'T be allowed in some of the better restaurants or dico's if you wear running shoes. This time around I bought running shoes that were not so WHITE. I wear them along with my sandles allot.
In terms of going shopping for clothes I enjoyed doing it and buying some things I could not buy back home. For example it is difficult to buy a XXXl dress shirt in Canada that fits me...most have enormous long sleeves. For me $50 is a bargain getting some custom made to fit me. And, when the shirt is finished they will deliver it to your door. And in the Pueblo where I live you will see many Colombians wearing runners and shorts. It is not that uncommon where the weather is warmer.

Anyway Scotty what you are saying makes perfect sense and I think we all agree with you.

i have been here for over a year and the #1 complaint i hear from locals/women is that gringos dress too casual(sandals,t-shirts,shorts ect.) The way you dress reflects the dont give a f***k attitude that some gringos have when in a foreign country.
