Shipping to Colombia

I remember someone posting a question about how to move your personal belongings from the US to Colombia and I think someone mentioned a good service to use. Well, I'm wondering what it would cost to ship a refrigerator to my mother-in-law? What is a good service to use? It's an old refrigerator that's been sitting in my garage for the past 5 years. Still works great.

Don't ship. Sell and buy here. it is better. joe

zed2283 says on Apr 10, 2008, 05:24:

Well... it's 10 years old and I figure I might be able to get $50 for it here. If I pay $200 to ship it, it's better than buying a new one there. No?

vicshere says on Apr 10, 2008, 05:31:

it will be more than 200....much more

Absolutely sell it there and send the money. You can buy a new one here for about 500,000 which is much less than the shipping would be. I had a pasta machine sent here ( an eBay purchase) and by the time it was finally delivered, the postage was more than $80.00 USD. a 12 lb box would be much cheaper to send than a refer.

Ok, thanks for the advice. That was what we originally thought to do (sell it here and send the money) but for $50 I might as well keep it in the garage. It seems that electronics and appliances sell for more down there than they do here, so I thought maybe I could come out a little ahead. But if I can get a decent refrigerator for 500,000 then that's a better option. Thanks!

vicshere says on Apr 10, 2008, 07:20:

for a new fridge your looking closer to 1,000,000 depending the size you want...maybe a used one for 500,000

a 25 inch tv should be around 500,000

Not to mention the warranty if anything happens with that 5 year old fridge you have to chill out some money for repairs, but if you buy it there at least you get some sort of warranty.

if you ship with a freight forwarder you are looking at around $3/pound from Miami to Colombia

and be careful giving used items to Colombians.they could take it as an insult.i have seen that happen in the past.

"be careful giving used items to Colombians"
your very right about that....don't do this....my wife wouldn't accept some used clothes I brought from Canada from my brothers and sisters....perfectly new.....the second time I brought clothes I told her they were new just wrinkled form the suitcase no problem ...the first clothes went to some poor people in the barrio

The Exito is a bit pricey but it'll give you an idea of how much refrigerators are selling for in Colombia. You can also buy it online from the US and have it shipped to a location in Colombia:

I just shipped a mid-size electric toy (and no it's not what you think ;) ) to Colombia. I guess it was a dozen pounds or so.

First I wanted to do FEDEX or UPS but they charged around $350 for their services. Damn, if Spirit really starts flying to Colombia I could take the thing in my hands and fly there myself for that price.

So I went for the regular mail, which cost around $60. That was the cheapest option. I've no idea if the thing gets there intact but economically nothing else made sense. For those of us who aren't rich, the border is very real.

I sent a box full of goodies once via the USPS and it got there 3 months later. The thing was sent on a ship to Cartagena, then it was sent to Bogotá and then Medellín. That's the story they told us in Colombia. At least we got it all in one piece but it was only $75 to send.

muchacho..........you question should be if it will get there at all..........sending regular mail the chances are slim........

The fridges in Colombia are much smaller and basic compared to even medium level brands and quality in the US. A 500.000 peso fridge in Colombia is probably about 15 cubic foot, with wire shelves. Nothing else. A fridge like we would buy in a Sears, Best Buy, Lowes, etc. would be in the 3.000.000 peso range IF you could even find one of that quality for sale. A 25 cubic foot Kenmore / GE / Whirlpool, etc in the US of average quality and features is in the $1100 dollar range - 2 million pesos - in the US. A little higher end, $2000 dollars is low-ball in the US.

I bought a perfectly good fridge in Exito for 500,000. It will hold everything you need. One packet of easy-singles cheese, one bag of milk, one tomato, 36 bottles of Peroni, 12 cans of Heinekin and 6 bottles of wine.
