Shipping to Colombia

My wife and I will be travelling to Medellin this Fall, I would like to bring a bicycle for my wife's uncle and a computer for my wife's family. Does anyone know if it is best (cheapest and safest) to ship items like these or pack them with in airplane luggage paying for extra weight/items.

Mil Gracias
Paul

Wondering if it wouldn't be easier at least for the bike to buy it in Colombia?

probably easier to buy but I bought a new bike and the used one I want to give my tio is a racing bike that would be expensive to buy in Colombia

don`t ship any electronic stuff! I got my laptop sent to me from Europe with an airline, for safty reasons and I was chocked when I had to pick it up. You have to pay hundreds of dollores to get any electronci stuff out of the custum and this was an old lap top. I can imagine that it would be a fortune to get a new cumputer out. Just bring it with you personally or just buy one in Colombia. Also, if you`re planning on buying a computer in the states, don`t buy a Mac. I have a powerbook, a Mac and it`s almost useless here in Colombia because they are so expensive here so hardly anyone has one and to find a printer for example that will except the mac software is just a big headiche. Just make it easy and go for a PC even though a Mac is soo much better.

Bring it on the plane. The excess baggage charge will be much less than shipping and taxes.

definitely excess baggage... if you are just a tourist, you don't have to pay customs on your computer, etc. you just get them registered in your passport and have them when you leave. i took everything down to my office and 2 1/2 year later when i left, it all went with me.

good luck.

Suitcase for the bike It might be easier to get a suitcase for your bike. I have a hardcase bag made specifically for bicycles and traveing by air. I do triathalons around the country and need to travel with my bike. You can probably find a used one at one of those play it again stores that sell used sporting eqiupment at a reasonable price. I know flying domestic, I pay about $50 dollars for the bike to fly with me. That will probably be quite a bit cheaper than shipping it Fed Ex.

Check with your airline website Some airlines have boxes for bikes, and allow you to take it as one of your 2 allowed checked bags. Look at your airline website under baggage- sporting equipment.

Alternatively you can ask your local bike shop to keep a box for you...(cheapest option) as does not cost anything, just make sure that you check with your carrier regarding what you have to do to bike (normaly remove handlebars, pedals, front wheel) and make sure you use loads of padding, nothing worse than getting the bike on the other end and realising the wheel won't fit cos' the frame is knackered!.....
Regarding best option it all depends where you are travelling from as some routes have fixed excess bagage charges and others charge per kilo. (for example when flying from london to colombia via the states you simply pay £70 for every piece of excess bagage but if travelling via france/spain etc you have to pay something ridiculous like £14 per kilo over your allowance), so the cheapest fare is not always the best when travelling heavy!....
