I can't seem to get definite answers from all sorts of authorities........I'm going to fly back to Medellin tomorrow........a shipper in Miami will crate and ship the bike.......I get some sort of customs agent in Medellin to process the paperwork for a temp permit ( same duration as my tourist visa )..........bike is relesaed to me and I am off on my way................Does this seem correct....has anyone done the same?
Many thanks....

its not that simple....you will have to leave a nice deposit on the bike at the DIAN...plus you will have to pay the SOAT insurance....remember those customs agent charge a pretty penny to complete those DIAN forums

if the bike is stolen your out your deposit ..... your shipper in Miami should a broker in Colombia probably Bogotá...then the documents are sent to a customs agent.....as far as I know...remember your bike is worth...depending on the year ...40-50 million pesos...so all deposits are based on that value

.....Colombia....Colombia....Colombia............it seems that no matter what you hear.......... or are told ...............about how to go about a certain procedure ............you will meet someone else who will give you completely different advice.................below is a piece from some guy's motocycle travel blog.............On Friday May 18th 2007 he entered Colombia from Venezuela at Cucuta..............all throughout his blog he goes into huge detail about every dollar things cost him..............getting a permit into Colombia...$0................now I'm back to square one..............here is a piece of his blog on arriving in Colombia........

At 2:00 PM, Colombia time, several of us entered the compound and found the window with a clerk behind it who passed out forms to fill out.

The cue of people who were trying to do the same as myself got all mixed up but it did not matter. One couple got in front of me and it took at least a half hour for the single clerk to read all of their paperwork and approve it. But as I said none of the sequence of order of this line of 6 of us who needed a special permission mattered.

The only clerk who looked at the paper work presented to him and approved it had to look at every single document. I thought I had everything and the necessary copies but when it came to my turn, he said I was missing a copy of my passport immigration entry stamp which I just got. I was told to go get a copy. Luckily, there was a copy entrepreneur about three blocks away. And they took Bolivar money. Keep in mind, I still do not have Colombia pesos.

I rushed back to the customs office and he let me turn my copy into him without waiting in line. How nice of him.

TWO hours later the line in front of this customs officer keeps growing and more and more people are walking away with approval permits. Six of us are still waiting. We are waiting for this single customs office to go and inspect our vehicles for the VIN and make sure it matches the paper work. So we wait and wait and wait until all of the other people who do not require a
VIN inspection to be processed. Finally, at 5:00 PM this one man gets out of his office and walks outside to inspect the vehicles. I thought I would be called but he did nothing to indicate to follow him. Then the six of us began realizing he was going outside to inspect the vehicles and one of the men helped me and told me to go outside. When I got outside, my KLR was not parked in the line of vehicles that were in front of the street vendors and I as told by the nice guards to move it over to the right place. The customs man saw me trying to get parked so he could inspect and then helped me get in line.

The customs man took some ink die and painted my VIN on the frame. The VIN is very hidden. He then put a plastic strip over the VIN and transferred the alpha numeric raised numbers to the plastic strip. It took him three tries to get it right.

I then took the plastic strip back to a typist who verified it matched what she typed. It did not, she typed the permit incorrectly. I also noticed she did not type in my passport number correctly. After a few more interruptions from other people who where having similar problem, I was the last person to receive my vehicle permit. It was now 6:00 PM. This is my worlds record time of 5 hours to get a vehicle permit.

vicshere says on Aug 9, 2007, 09:41:

hey Ken
In North America specifically, the only organization authorized to issue personal tourist vehicle Carnets for Canadian, Mexican, and US-registered bikes, is the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA). As of 2000, the CAA charges a non-refundable CD$350 for the Carnet itself, an additional CD$150 (unused balance refundable) for costs, and a minimum CD$5,000 bond on any USA vehicle (Canadian bikes=CD$2500) by bank letter of credit, VISA/MC, certified cheque or money order. The CD$5,000 is refunded when the Carnet document is returned to CAA, 'discharged' by Customs to show that the bike has been returned home. You get the bond money back, but without interest. There is also a lengthy application procedure and document. In recent years, fewer than a dozen North American bikes annually have used personal tourist vehicle Carnets, in part because the procedure is itself costly and time consuming. A Carnet usually makes sense [only] if you are taking the bike on a lengthy trip that includes a number of different countries.

you guys crach me up. Everyone os so stucl on wanting to ship something here. Just suck up and buy a new one while you are here, and sell it if you ever leave. Importing something SPECIAL spells disaster.. Firts, buy a BIG BIG BIG sign in spanish that says STEAL ME FIRST and place it on your car, truck SUV or motorcycle. Then, when you need a part for repair, sit back and wait and pay the IMPORT TAX on the part, plus shipping ect.

Anyone one to place a bet on how long it takes for that goldwing to get stolen. I know I know, you are going to keep it in the garage and under lock and key.

What those of you who do not live here FAIL TO UNDERSTAND and many of us keep trying to tell you is that THIS IS COLOMBIA. If someone decides they want your scoot, or your car, or your suv ect., two guys on a motorcycle will meet ya at the red light, day or night, people or no other people around, it doesnt matter and they will very nicley place a pistol against your head. if you dont move fast enough you get shot, if you do move fast you still MIGHT get shot, depends on their mood. You think I am joking, I am not, I LIVE HERE, see this crap every week in the news, and this is for LOCAL cars, trucks ect. Two days ago, a 17 yr old got his brains blown out over a 20 dollar cell phone. And if you think this is the EXCEPTION to the rule, ok, but its not.

Those of us who LIVE HERE keep trying to give those of you who dont GOOD INFO but no one seems to want ot listen.

Good luck with your trip and be careful.

PS. If you dont think I am serious, just ask your loved one or whoever you are coming here to see and see if they dont tell you EXACTLY what I just said.

JorgeBogota says on Aug 10, 2007, 10:45:

I have to agree with BAQ on this one. I do not know where the other fellow is living but it must be a very secure neighborhood. The car and motorcycle theft problem in Colombia is one of the worst in the world. Colombia is the only place I know where the insurance companies pay to have the license plate number of the car or motorcycle engraved on all the parts, the glass, ect to try and keep the thefts down. Just because your motorbike is on of a kind wont prevent it from theft. MOTORS are a hot item, I can see the thief taking your Honda only for the motor and possibly the tires. The other type of thief would use it as a play toy up in the mountians, away from the city in a smaller pueblo.

Also, when you ship parts into colombia, you must state the tpye or item and the value and DIAN usually requires payment of import tax.

RAAAY, if I might suggest, ask the cops and the LOCALS what they think when they see your motorbike regarding the % chance of it being stolen. JUST BE CAREFUL and remember you are in Colombia. GOOD LUCK !

RAAAY says on Aug 10, 2007, 15:23:

Some people will not fly because there is a chance of the plane going down.............some people will not ride motorcycles because it comes with certain dangers...........some won't climb mountains or scuba dive because of the dangers..........I fly planes...... climb mountains.......scuba dive and ride motorcycles.............the way I see it.........if s--t is going to happen....well....it's going to happen.............If I come back to where I parked ...........and there is an empty spot where my bike used to be....................... and all I am left with is the ignition key and fond memories......well......so be it........I'll go for another beer and whine a little..............I just don't believe in the notion that you should not have something or do something......because of what might happen......................there are 100,000 bikes stolen every year in the States..........that's way more than here, even per head of capita............everything comes with a little risk..............f--k....have you ever tried to walk across the street in Laureles..?
