Shipping Personal Vehicles From California to Colombia?

I will be moving to Manizales, Colombia in June of 2006 from California, and would like to know if anyone has shipped their personal vehicles from the USA to Colombia, and what their experience has been. I have a BMW and a Harley-Davidson i would like to ship there. I know that Bogota has both a Harley-Davidson dealership and a BMW dealership. I was told by a local moving company that the fee/tax/tarif for bringing in a vehicle is equal to 100% of the value of the vehicle. So i should expect to pay $20,000 for my Harley valued at $20,000!.....doesn't sound right to me, however, i wanted to see if anyone has some suggestions or relevant comments. Thanks!

shipping Details of shipping a land rover from Panama to Colombia in 2002 are here:

http://www.ihana.com/big_trip/diary/2002/03/march2002_shipping_colombia.htm

It doesn’t seem too difficult, however I’d prefer to hire a car and driver myself.

The main website http://www.ihana.com/big_trip/index.htm is about their travels in Central America and South America and is very readable, but is probably of more interest to men!

Shipping If you ride the Harly to Panama you can ship it via back packer boat to Cartagena for $300.00. It will cost you $250.00 extra if you travel with it, takes about 5 days with a stop over in the San Blas Islands. To ship a car from Panama in a container to Cartegina it costs about $500.00. You can temporarily import a viechle into Colombia for 90 days at no cost to you check with a shipping agent.

Technically, Colombia prohibits import of all used cars and motos. The only people granted exceptions are diplomats and foreign employees of NGOs such as the UN.

That said, I'm sure there's any number of under-the-table ways to bring in something like a motorcycle. The car might be more difficult.

Bear in mind that in big cities, at leasts, it's not uncommon to see police roadblocks checking all the papers and serial numbers on motos to make sure everything matches up.

Your Big Problem... will be, if you are going to keep it permanently in Colombia, when it comes time to get Colombian registration. You can bring it in on a temporary basis for 90 days, I think. Other wise, if it is new (no used vehicles) look for a BIG tax. Really cheaper to buy in Colombia. Legally the offending vehicle can be seized and you will still owe the tax.

Something like a BMW K1200LT is $94.000.000 pesos and a F650GS is $40.000.000 pesos. The smaller stuff like a Kawaski KMX 125 will run $9.000.000 pesos and a a little put-put AKT125 that they sell at Exito runs $2.800.000 pesos. All plus tax, tag and title as they say in the USA.

BTW, Colombian law will require you wear a vest with the tag number of the cycle on the back when driving-helmet also required..

I tried the same for my VW golf, but this time from San Francisco to Japan.
they said it will cost from 700 to 900 us insurance included, and they will take care of all import requirements, at the end I sold the car because Japanese cars have much smaller gas tanks and they run on km per hour, and the conversion and the parking space fee in Japan are no peanuts, but still like that was worth to do the shipping of the car. (Remember also Japanese traffic runs on the left and the steering wheel is on the right) second because I stupidly decided to move to France instead of Japan.
I am not sure if you have to make the conversion of the tachometer to km per hour from miles in Colombia but I don’t thinks so because I remember a guy from high school his father brought his old Benz from Miami and he drove around in miles.

Import and legalizing it is based on the price car in Colombia, I am sure your car in Colombia (as it is) is much more expensive than in the United States.
But I don’t agree it will cost as same as the value of the vehicle, so if you want to sell the car in the states and buy it again in here you will definitely have to put some more money.
If you love your toys and will be staying long down here is worth to invest 2k or 3k.
Some people thinks shipping a car to another country is a crazy idea but my father in law who is an expert and clever business man told me that sometimes what it seems to be wrong is the right to do, like in this case.
So to Japan is about 800 bucks for VW Golf from Oakland to Osaka port I figure from LA to Buenaventura port will be a little bit more for a heavy Benz and because everything cost more when it comes to Colombia.
Just look on the yellow pages or browse the internet like this lost Colombian did back then and ask around, there are plenty of companies and for a extra fee and they even have packages.
They have it ready for you and you just pick them up with all paperwork done.
