shipping car from miami to barranquilla

I want to bring my Freelander from Miami to Barranquilla, plus some spare parts. Is anyone here who made experience on importing his car to Colombia? How long did it take to get it through customs and how much is the duty (round about in %)? A friend of mine said the duty on cars has been changing last year and it should be cheaper now...

Thanks for your help.

From everything I have read, importing a used vehicle is impossible, with a very few exceptions (except for diplomats, and short term visits). Supposedly, all used auto parts are verboten.

I have been told that with a pensionado visa you can get 3 months (duty free), renewable every 90 days, for all enternity.

Last I knew it was around 33% and only Vehicles 2008 with less then 10,000 miles on the Speedo!

Aha, so need not be totally new?

Mike, is that the same duty that would be included in buying a new, imported, car in Colombia?

You should be able to find more information on import restrictions doing an internet search. I recall coming across the info that the car must have been manufactured in the same year it's imported. It seems probable that that's the model year on the title as opposed to the actual manufacture date which of course could have been in the previous year.

Also note, if you are moving to Colombia using a cargo container, I was told we could not use the same container to bring in a new vehicle.

I wish Colombia had same sort of entry for retirees that say Panama has, but then again I don't want to move to Panama...jajaja...

We are hoping to buy new/used vehicle there in Medellin, everywhere we have lived, we have always liked to spend my money locally. Might be more expensive to buy there...doubtful after all I have read...but I hope to bring the place I live more prosperity, even at my own expense. :)

Here is the agent we will be using, the speak excellent english and have been more helpful and professional.

Gator, does that include a 2008, even with less then 10K miles on it? These were the numbers(10K) I was quoted from a couple of large reputable Dealers here in Miami. TO SHOW the Disparity in the Export laws worldwide, I shipped a BMW Motorcycle to Denmark that was over 20 years old(35k miles on the motor)without a Hitch yet a Reletively New Car with 5000 miles on the Clock cannot be shipped to Colombia from Miami. When I have time in the next few days, I will phone one of these dealers and the Freight forwarder/shipper for the latest on this subject.

I am pretty sure basic rule is the car has to have zero miles Also the car must be the current model year, like 2008 or no more than one year older like a 2007 model never titled. The is a lot of paper like a manufacturer's certificate of origin show it a a new vehicle and several others that I have forgotten. It would be interesting what a shipper would say. To me the definitive source would be DIAN in Colombia.

If you shipped with out knowing for sure you would be SOL when the vehicle reached its POE if you did not have the exact paper work. That are expediters that handle this paper work in Bogotá and the POE cities..

so I guess a good plan would be to buy a high mileage 2008 car for a cheap price in the US and then roll back the speedometer and ship to Colombia and sell it for a handsome profit....just an idea...no one checks the speedometer here ....and I think its a common practice on used cars here

listo

Gator says on Feb 18, 2008, 18:46:

The certificate of origin would cause that not to work in as much as it must come from the manufacturer.

even from a dealer...hummm but that would have the miliage on the bill of sale....photoshop again maybe

Vic, saw on the news that DIAN(customs) will be auctioning seized cars in several cities.
