If you are afraid of fish in general I would not venture in the sea, I hear that is where many fish tend to hang out.

dangerous sealife depending on which beaches you use, there are a few species you should look out for.The most common one being a small brown fish that floats on the surface of the water,it has many local names but the latin name is CRAPUS FLOATIUS it wont do you much damage but it carries many diseases and smells awful,be particularly alert for it when doing the breast stroke.
the other one looks like a thin tube of rubber with a small bobble at the end which contains a noxious fluid. The latin name is FLUSHED CONDOMI.It is also a surface floater.

Stay away from Boca Ceniza near Puerto Colombia then...it's infested with sharks...

As New Boy said...worry more about the two-legged kind!

Youll be fine I have dove alot in those types of waters and if you are just going swimming on the beach, then no worries mate. Now if this was Africa Coast, Austrailia or some areas of the Med, I would tell you to enter not expecting to return. One of my scariest experiances was when I was in the Navy off the coast of Somalia in Africa back in 1992 and I can't tell you how many white sharks I saw. Our S.E.A.L. team and EOD divers were very leary as well and no unnecessary dives were waranted. I would hate to have fallen over the bow. I never went to Austrailia but I have heard stories from other guys that visited that had a familiar song to sing about not only white sharks but other nasty creatures ie: Jellyfish and octopus that can kill within minutes of their sting/bite not to mention the Crocs that frequent certain areas of the salt waters. The carribean is relatively safe with exception to a few breeds that are deep water sharks. You have more to worry about here with rays and urchins which wont kill you but will ruin your day at the beach so just shuffle your feet when you walk and you will be fine.

Swimming in Florida close to shore the water is usually murky where the sharks attack, by mistake of course. It seems like no predators are brightly coloured, so leave the flashy bathing suit at home as well as the shiny water resistant watch. When I dive I use a black wet suit, black bc, and nothing is shiny except the valve on my regulator. In Florida you have to watch out for Barracuda going after the shiny bits.

true history...
when the oldgringo was young..25..he decided to go out for a liitle swim, out back, and look for dinner with his spear-gn.

providencia....east side, reef, 5.30 pm.
water depth 10-40' sandy visibility 60'
strong current south
alone...
all the wrong things...who knew?

so, there he was looking down, for dinner, when he sees movement, coming in fom the haze, on the bottom, with the current, a huge, black, massive shark. the shark somehow sees or senses me immediately, and whips his tail once, and is gliding by me, on the left, his black eye open, as he goes by, his stripes are clear.
..as he circles, i begin to pee and pray, thinking that my parents will never know what happened to their son. he returns much closer the second time, closing his eye, as he brushes my shoulder. one more time he circles, as i hold my position, gun pointing out, sitting in the current. this time, he comes straight on, until his nose meets the point of the spear, as my fins were in his great, awful mouth.
somehow, the youngringo knew that if he fired that toothpick, he would be dead. so, he pushed, hard,..tiger didn't like it, backed off, whipped his tail, and hit it for the bottom. now was the time to spin, and hit it for shore, the scariest moments forever frozen.
thats how the youngringo became old.

of course, when the event was related to my pirate hosts, they confirmed that everyone knows about the tigers, they have been throwing dead horses and cows into the sea there for generations.
and in all that time, they never heard of a shark coming up onto the land to molest anyone.......duhhh.....
and as they still travel freely between san andres and providence...

I think if you have a mask, snorkel and fins you will soon enjoy swimming with the fish. It is one of my greatest pleasures, spending a few hours floating above a reef, diving down for a closer look when something catches my eye.

Perhaps the aprehension is because you are swimming or paddling without seeing what is around you, suddenly a fish brushes past your leg and you piss your pants and run screaming from the water to the safety of the beach.

When you become part of the environment, slow down, take time to enjoy, even a run in with most sharks is nothing to sweat. Who knows you might meet a celebrity like Bob Esponja.

Wait until you have to hack off your own arm because a moray eel has latched on whilst you were poking around for lobster. I hate when that happens. Remember, always wear very loose gloves!
