Shakira jumps the shark

Shakira's new album Fijacion Oral, I'm sorry to say, has jumped the shark. I just listened to most of it, and except for the single with Alejandro Sanchez Pisarro (Sanz), the songs were boring at best.
El Gordo y la Flaca aired a killer spoof video of La Tortura, & the chica sitting in for Lili ( while her uncle was being feted in Hollywood ) thought , if I understood her correctly, that Sanz' new amiga Lena is a better singer than Shaki.
As usual Shakira had quite a mouthful of teeth.
Maybe some of the tracks I haven't heard yet have some redeeming value.

Por que todavia no esta aqui? The discussion seems to be more about patriotic feeling, which is fine, than about Shaki's songs. Has anyone else listened to the new album and been charmed by a song other than La Tortura? Un dia de enero, one of the better ones, might just qualify for elevator music. Does any song have the lyrical energy of Estoy aqui?
If there is a real deterioration, perhaps it is because she has been cut off from el pais, the source of her musical inspiration. Is it necessary that Shaki lives outside Colombia? Why don't Thalia and Paulina Rubio have to live outside of Mexico?

Cplus2 As muscial artists become more successful and as they grow they have alot more freedom in the type of music they write and perform. No successful artist is going to write or record music just for their fans, they are going to do it for themselves and for art's sake.
In the history of recorded music, every artist from the Beatles, Sinatra, Elvis, Springsteen, U2, have put out albums that were negatively reviewed by some critics. Thank God that Shakira isn't so tied into the main stream, and she can grow as an artist...I would never expect her or any other artist to put out the kind of music I want to hear...I have to respect their genius and accept the fact that what's in their musical heart isn't always going to be pleasing to me. So cut her a little slack...

She needs to return to Currumba more often to get back in touch with her soul.

Until then, I'll be cherry-picking those other 2 songs from ITunes. Forget buying the album!!!

I think Shakira jumped the shark a loooong time ago. What is pop music anyway? Not too much about art, just selling to the masses. She moved to Miami, began to sing in English...get the picture? I saw her album cover yesterday here in Barcelona. Supposedly inspired by some mom and her baby. Why not take a picture of a real mother with her baby? Shakira isn´t a mother, nor resembles one. Seems really superficial to me. I forgot where "jump the shark came from". I know it was a TV show where someon jumped a shark or something, but which one?

moving to Miami Every successful Colombian artist whether it be Shakira, Carlos Vives, Juanes, Botero has left Colombia after making it big, not for art's sake, but for security reasons. Even the successful Mexican artists do this, ie. Juan Gabriel, Vicente Fernandez, Paulina Rubio et. al...all live in the U.S. Its' not that they want to leave their roots...plus the U.S. is the world center of the music business.

Now, if Shakira really wanted to sell to the masses, she would probably make another English recording, or maybe do some earlier style recordings. She probably has literally hundreds of non-recorded songs she has written that she could choose from...the fact that some don't like her new recordings is evidence that she isn't selling to the masses. She is doing the music that's in her heart right now...thank God that she has gotten beyond "moscas en la casa" (my favorite by the way)...

I read where Alejandro Sanz is exploring recording an all English album...I guess he jumped the shark also...

Those who criticize Shakira haven't much knowledge of how the music business works, nor much knowledge of the artistry of song writing and recording.

Incorporates many music styles....

COLX.. If you define someone as "musical genius" it is her "musical" that is judge NOT anything else. Ray Charles is judged by his work, NOT because he was blinded while composing it, Freddy was judged by his worked NOT because he was dying of AIDS while composing it. Bethoven was practically deaf when he wrote many of his later works(9th symphony IRC & MOre), historian call his a genious SOLELY ON HIS WORK. If his stuff sucks, he wouldn't have been remember as a genius, hardship or handicap don't figure into the "rating".

No one is taking anything away from Shakira, no one is saying she isn't smart, talented or hardworking. What about Juanes or Carlos Vives? Are they Genius too? Judge Shakira by her existing work. I may be wrong here, but has she sold more albums than Meduno or Ricky Martin? No one is considering those guys genius.

Otherwise, everyone that had to overcome difficulties or handicaps to achieved something would be consider genius. Then that terms loses it's significances. Should we say farmers in COL are "genius" because they are able to farm DESPITE lack of resources and conflicts? Or how about COL college students that get there degree DESPITE taking hour bus, working full time, and caring for their family, are they genius? too..

kernow62 says on Jun 13, 2005, 12:34:

I would hardly call Elvis a musical genius, most of his music was lifted from black artists that did far superior versions of the songs themselves. Big Mama Thornton for example, that's singing with some soul not that watered down crap Elvis played.

Musical genius to me are folks like Taj Mahal, David Bowie, Adrian Belew. If you want to check out some inspired musicianship check out some of Belew's solo guitar orchestrations where every part of an orchestra including percussion is played on a heavily processed guitar.

Shakira is many steps above most mainstream singers it is ridiculous, I noticed her talent long before she started singing in English, before she mixed in Middle-eastern influences, before she dyed her hair blonde, back when she had a unique brand of Latin rock (it was far from pop). She will leave a lasting legacy of music just as valid as those artists many consider to be legends.

The opening act was California Guitar Trio, if you don't know their music you owe yourself a treat. How about Bach fugues for organ played realistically and adeptly on a trio of Ovation guitars.

Shakira: 'Music is a language on its own'
Thursday, June 16, 2005 Posted: 2:44 PM EDT (1844 GMT)

NEW YORK (AP) -- Stardom in any language is old hat for Shakira.

A singer since she was a teen, the Colombia native has long been a sensation in Latin America and in many Spanish-speaking countries, selling millions of records with her sultry voice, rock-tinged anthems and belly gyrations.

Yet mounting a campaign for similar success in the United States proved to be more taxing than even Shakira anticipated.

"It was definitely a challenge. My knees were shaking when I was thinking about writing and singing in a foreign language," the blond diva told The Associated Press in heavily accented English as she recalled writing songs with a dictionary by her side.

However difficult it may have been for Shakira to make the language leap, her success translated very well: Her English-language debut, 2001's "Laundry Service," sold more than 3 million copies nationwide as she transfixed music fans with her alluring image and songs such as "Whenever, Wherever" and "Underneath Your Clothes."

"She was already a stealth star by the time English radio discovered her," Sean Ross of Edison Media Research, which tracks the radio industry, said in explaining her success. "She certainly had a very media-ready presence ... I heard her explained by a lot of people as the Spanish-language Alanis (Morissette).

But when it came time for the follow-up to "Laundry Service," Shakira decided to return to her native tongue.

Last week, she released "Fijacion Oral" ("Oral Fixation") -- her first album in Spanish since 1998's "Donde Estan Los Ladrones? (Where Are the Thieves?)"

"I know that releasing my Spanish record first is contrary to what the industry expected after the success of 'Laundry Service,' but really what my instincts dictated," the 28-year-old told The Associated Press.

"It was very important that also my non-Hispanic fans understood that singing in Spanish is such an important thing to me as well, because I had a career 14 years singing in Spanish. That's a very fundamental part of my artistic sensibilities."

Double project
Shakira's latest project has two parts; while a Spanish-language album was released first, "Oral Fixation Vol. 2" is slated for release in November. Although it will be all-English, it's not a duplication of "Fijacion Oral": The songs will be completely different.

"I found myself with the surprise that I had 60 songs, and I selected my favorite ones, which cut it down to 20, and I still thought it was too much music to put on one album, so I decided to make a double project," she said. "Some of the songs happen to be in Spanish, some of them happen to be in English."

While the first single, "La Tortura" with fellow Latin superstar Alejandro Sanz, has shot to the top of the Latin charts, it's also inching its way up the U.S. pop charts. The video for the song -- which features Shakira doing a torso-jiggle that would make a contortionist envious -- has gotten heavy rotation on MTV. And for the first time, MTV aired a "Making of the Video" about the clip exclusively in Spanish.

It's unusual for international artists who enjoy such crossover appeal with an English-language debut to return to their native tongue -- and even more unusual to then market it to a pop audience in the United States. When Ricky Martin and Marc Anthony released their Spanish-language albums after their pop successes, they were geared toward the Latin audience almost exclusively.

But Shakira thinks fans today are more open to listening to good music, whatever the language. Her album features production work from Rick Rubin, but also Gustavo Cerati of Soda Stereo fame. It has bossa nova touches, as well as rock and old-time pop influences.

"I think that little by little, the Hispanic audience can contribute to change old rules, to modify them. This is the moment for those things to happen, for music in Spanish to play on Anglo stations, or vice versa," she said. "Music is a language on its own, when it comes from the heart and when it's authentic."

Shakira, who hasn't been on the charts since 2003, joked that "people might think I've been scratching my belly or something like that because I've been out of circulation ... but in reality I was just working every day -- writing, producing, making demos, creating this album, giving birth to this baby ... actually, it's two babies, it's twins."

Besides, Shakira said, it was important to take time off to give her music a chance to marinate.

"The truth is that I don't make albums like hamburgers. I have to dedicate the time that music requires," she said. "Songs have needs, songs ask you for things, and as a producer, I have to maintain this dialogue with my own songs, to find out what they really wanted from me."

Yeah Greenday I admire her work and her beauty. She is a gifted individual who makes good music.

However, GENIUS is too strong of a word to describe her music. On that we disagree. It cheapens the word, and that is not meant as a slight to her. But with the ill-placed usage of that word.

Shakira To me Colombia has nothing to prove in music, Colombia has the talent it is clear, just remember all those groups you fine people just mentioned, and don't forget the DR. Kike Santander. My Colombian other half listened to the new Shakira CD while I was covering my Jukebox routes this monday while I was putting Shakira in my Jukes and she told me La tortura is the only good song. I think Shakira went to deep artisticaly, its like when a paint expert sees a work of art, and you looking at the same paint sees a blotch of running paint.

Where is the Bahamas home? Anybody knows on wich Island her Bahamas home is located?
Does she have her own studio, or she records from Chris Black's studio (discovered Bob Marley)?

In regards to the Shakira issue...I have never really liked her music except maybe for her earlier songs which are alright...Seems like Tinto and I share a weakness for certain very wild and talented colombian Musicians...
Seriously though, I dont think composing a song and making it have sense in two languages is that difficult...You can always have someone proofreading and her songs arent even that deep. However, if im clubbing and La Tortura comes up Ill dance it but thats a far as Id go. I had the chance to listen to the whole album earlier today and to be honest, I much rather like her previous things.
And before some start ranting n about her musical genius yadda yadda... she is talented and I think shes admirable in many of the things I have read about her, but that doesnt mean I have to enjoy listening to her tunes.

i like the song, but her dancing leaves.. much to be desired. It's just a bastardize version of the "robot". She danced much better in her past video IMO. Of course people who love SHakira unconiditionally will love whatever she puts out. Yeah, when she said the comment about she gets pleasure from her mouth.. that's to easy to comment on. ;-)!!!

Perdoname I love Shakira to death, but I was really disappointed. It seems a lot of the songs are monotonous and nothing too lovely. Por que?

Shaki lives on an estancia in Spain The estate is large and has its own recording studio, where much of her work is done, including collaborations. The stay in the bahamas was temporary. She had bought a house in Miami, where she received a lot of help from the Estefans ( who better? ) in the business side of the recording industry, but put it on the market after the move to Spain , and a rumored finding of the novio in her house with a modelo americano.
She has family in Spain, including an older brother who is a medical doctor, and still has family in Miami, including a brother living in her house. Her father was born in New York and so has US citizenship.
I am sorry to say that I am in agreement with the others who have listened to the album and commented. It is not that the songs are bad, it is just that (other than the one with Sanz in different versions ) they lack the ritmo, vitality, and spark of so much of her work after Magia.
Maybe expectations were unrealistic. After all, creativity has its seasons, and quite a few years have passed since the previous work.
On the bright side, probably expectations for the album in English with different songs have been drastically lowered. If the songs in Spanish lacked ritmo and vitality, what is to be expected from Shaki singing in English? So it is possible that this album can at least be better than expected.

Watersports Warm water snorkling or diving is always good, it's never for nothing. I'm guessing your earlier reference to DR is the Dominican Republic. All the best Reggaeton music ( a lot from Puerto Rico ) is produced by Luney Tunes in the DR, and the best mixer/producer from there is Noriega. That's why you're always hearing them say Luney Tunes & Noriega on the tracks.
