Can`t help you out with your question but would also like to know what kind of charity and where

There are also unscrupulous foreigners who start a charity, collect donations, pay themselves a hefty salary and then give whatever is left over to some organization

"It might be easier to work with an existing charity than to try to re-invent the wheel. "

but that way it would be impossible to get that house in Bogota, there is no money in making cakes so a charity scam makes perfect sense... is a good way to supplement the income with some tax free dollars. You could also look into pyramid schemes, importing of counterfeit goods and some telephone scams.

Oneforamillion I will go out on a limb here and guess that CakeDesigner-wannabe is a broke ass.

I am no fan of some of the CakeDesigner-wannabe comments but his posts are ok.

I haven't thought about what exactly kind of charity I would like to set up, but something to do with deaf children will be the most ideal for me, because I am deaf myself and have met many deaf people in Cali last October.

For your information, I am not interested in making money for myself. I just want "name" for myself and I feel the need to help the disadvantage.

I am not going to give them money. If they need food, I will order. If they need medical supplies, I will order. If they need space suits, I will order ............. in this way they can never see the money.

I am more interested in setting up charitable foudnation in a legal way.

STEPHEN AUBREY - Not interested in these stupid pyramid or scam thing! For your information, I am not really a cake designer (It was a joke with Johnny2008). I don't even know how to bake cakes!!

I stand corrected ....your at the other end of the spectrum an Egomaniac I think Oneforamillion is right you need money to start this ,if you had money you would already be moved away from that dump Cornation street and living the dream in Colombia.

Stephen Aubrey... If I have lots of money, I would prefer to live in Cape Town !!! Look Stephen I am NOT you and you do not know me at all..... you just assume I am a greed. if I were a greed, I wouldn't give a damn about helping other people!!

There are ways to raise money LEGALLY without using some stupid pyramid investment.

I am not here to ask how to raise money. I simply need information how to SET up charitable foundation in Colombia and need information

Amazing, these negative comments about setting up a charity here. No wonder nearly everybody does not bother and this country needs these things just like many third world countries.
It is clear for me here that you are guilty until you can prove yourself otherwise: in the UK it is generally the reverse.
For those sceptics among us: apart from the inevitable risks of corruption, what are the other risks and problems encountered? One word-organization!
This is one factor that favours a person with a first world education and could be an attribute for a place like this. The chances are, Cake may be totally clean too!
Another thing is that CakeDesigner-wannabe says that he is deaf and I am prepared to believe that. Assuming that to be the case, do you not think that a person who has had ongoing personal experiences of being deaf with all of the associated communicative, discriminative and educational difficulties that go with it, has a better idea of how to approach the problems, what resources are required and how best to utilize them? The UK, as far as I am aware, does offer reasonable levels of support to people in that situation and here, unless you are rich, there will be no support outside of the family setting.
Cake-I wish you luck in your project and perhaps a visit to the Colombian Consulate in London may be useful for finding out more about setting up a charity in Colombia, along with some useful contacts and hopefully potential sponsors! Try not to be put off by what the sceptical members have to say. For those who feel positively about your "dream", you never know-they may even offer a bit of support when things get moving! There are many retired or semi-retired foreigners on this site who may welcome the opportunity of using their dormant skills again, even if it is on a part-time basis, and to do something for their chosen adopted country and its people.

The UK sounds like a wonderful place to start a charity, any unemployed slob living in their parents basement can start up a charity and no one will think that to be suspicious.

There is already schools for the deaf here in Bogota ie the Filadelfia School for Deaf Children in Bogota ,with their HQ located at Deaf Child Worldwide 15 Dufferin Street London EC1Y 8UR 44 (0)20 7549 0454,they emailed me back today and said the project in Bogota is still ongoing and are Registered Charity No 1016532 in the UK.I am sure there is others just look around ,why not help out volunteer and build on an existing groups like this instead of trying to be the hero?trying to make a NAME for yourself makes yourself sound selfish with it's all about me attitude. If your rich with unlimited resources or have a network of other like minded passionate people that are driven to get funds needed than for sure do it, otherwise I think it is a bit suspicious to start a charity without this.

To me when I hear on the news that an anonymous donor gave x amount of dollars to help with organization/charity ,or volunteers that devote their time freely behind the screens these are the real hero's. They are doing it because they have a genuine desire to help, not looking to make a name for them self as some sort of a hero or glory hound.
This is only my opinion .

Nothing to do with being selfish .... it makes me better motivation to set up charitable foundation. Doing charity for other people is not the same as setting up one.

They already have a charity so why not make another one???? EVER THOUGHT OF IT?

2 charities are better than 1. EVER THOUGHT OF IT???

What about deaf school in CALI, MEDELLIN, etc. EVER THOUGHT OF IT ??? Not only Bogota

It is always good to set up more charities - nothing to do with being selfish. It is not crime to make name for myself.

Lance Armstrong makes name for himself by setting up LIVESTRONG - is he selfish???? Without him, Livestrong wouldn't raise millions!!!

No deaf people in my country knows about Bogota's deaf children, but they know me.

EXCUSE ME....WHAT MAKES YOU THINK I AM AN UNEMPLOYED???? No unemployed slob can set up any charitable. It is very strict rules to stop them stealing money.

I do not like the way you accused me of stealing or trying to make profits,

I see your profile, you are a retired military - let me guess - ARMY DESERTER??????

Jumbo, how about establishing that you can live sustainably in Colombia, first of all? You will learn a lot.

As it stands, I'd guess that Colombians would eat your lunch from start to finish. You'd be leaking money like crazy.

I don't recommend you go ahead with a new charity at this time. But by all means, integrate with an existing one as a helper, find a mentor or two and learn about it from the bottom up. You may have had some contact with charities in England, but you need experience in the Colombian context before you start your own.

"this may seem a strange post but it is not...when in colombia men need to be aware that colombia women may try to be seductive and entice a travelling gringo to have sex with them..to be forewarned is to be forearmed..." -- pow wow

Army deserters don't get a monthly military pension, medical or dental benefits which is what I get.

The unemployed comment was not directed at you but the attitude of UK people with no suspicion "It is clear for me here that you are guilty until you can prove yourself otherwise: in the UK it is generally the reverse"

YOUR NO LANCE ARMSTRONG that was my point, that is why I said If your rich with unlimited resources sure do it.Not a no name want-a-be.

Come on you guys, that is enough.
I would say that by reading Cake's comments, it is possible that he does not possess the best skills at expressing himself in English. Sorry Cake, that is not to insult you but I am reading what you are writing. Perhaps the reason is that it is harder to interact and learn the finer skills of communication when you are deaf (even when writing) because it is a hard enough job to understand, speak or write English well when you can hear.
Perhaps cake is not trying to "make a name for himself" in the manner in which it is being interpreted by some here.
It may be that he only wants to have that wonderful feeling of achieving something good by helping people and what the hell is wrong with that?
I do things for others from time to time, because if the people are worthy and do not take advantage of my good nature, then I may feel good about it too. That does not make me a freak does it? I do not do these things to fuel my ego but for a genuine love towards my fellow human beings whether they are Brits, Colombians or whatever. If Cake feels he can contribute towards a worthy cause, let him get on with it and either offer support or keep quiet. If you feel that he is creating propaganda for himself, rather than genuinely seeking advice, then it may be that your assessment of people has become twisted as a result of your own personal experiences.
Go for it Cake and I hope you are successful with whatever you may decide to do.

Thanks for your support/comment, Ken. My English isn't good but as a matter of fact, my English is better than most deaf people!!! I know my English is perfect, but I couldn't be bothered to waste my time trying to correct it, or trying to learn. I graduated Mathematics in the University - one of the top classes, but work in the Fashion business. I have involved in small voluntary work in the past and it had always made me feel good. I have always wanted to set up charity in disadvantage countries. It is one of my goals.

Thanks once again for your comments....
