Sending Money from Uk to Colombia

I often send small amounts of money to someone in colombia. I always do it by a bank transfer from my account at the Halifax to the persons account in colombia. It often gets there within 1 working day which is quick. However, it costs at least £17.50 and when i want to send £100 this is alot. Im just wondering if anyone knows of a cheaper way to do send money which is reliable ( from uk). thanks

There are quite a few places and £17.50 is a fortune!

My friends use Condor in Kennington, there are a few different ones in Elephant & Castle, in London Bridge you can use Servienvios and in Brixton inside La Carniceria Las Americas there is a giro company too although these are to mention but a few, if you know any Colombians here in London just ask them for the nearest.

Most Colombians I know here don't use WU, I think the comission is too high.
Maybe someone else can help you on that one.

MoneyGram is much cheaper then Western Union, same service and lots of service points.
From Holland it was less then 10 euro of costs included.

Yep, even though Western Union is expensive, it is a lot cheaper than 17 pounds! Moneygram is even cheaper than Western Union, like Janneman said.

The way they work is simple. You go to a Western Union (etc) place, fill out a simple form, they take your cash, plus the fee, and wire the cash into the system. Then, the intended recipient can pick up the cash at a Western Union kiosk in Colombia. All they need is an ID and or the tracking number. The way these places make money, is the sender pays an upfront fee, and then the service takes a little cut off of the exchange rate too. So if you send $100 dollars, and the exchange rate is $1 / 2.250 pesos, Western Union might exchange the money electronically at say $1 / 2.100 pesos. (just an example) There is no fee for the recipient to claim the money.

Haha GIB, I liked the way you nonchalantly slipped in, "send her" and "she can" in your post. Now you are assuming a lot. Maybe the guy has a cousin needing to pay for school supplies! jajaja

Moneygram is the way to go from the UK, if outside of London.

Fee of £4.99 for £100, whereas Western Union charges £14.99 for £100.

I am unsure whether this is a promotion from Moneygram or a permanent price.

Again, you pay the money at a Moneygram agent and receive a transaction code. This needs passing on to the recipient who quotes this a moneygram agent in Cali who will pay out when ID is shown. Website lists all agents - www.moneygram.co.uk

Strange that one English Hunk - the website is definitely quoting £4.99 - have you been and asked at an agent?

my mum have a natwest card with her, so she can take money in any atm in Colombia and they don't charge me any fee.

but i have used twice xoom.com and they have been very good, western union takes lots of commission, example in xoom if you send 200 dollar they will take $4,99 standard fee commission and your friend can pick the money no problem in davivienda or BBVA i did everything online.
