Sending dollars TO the U.S.

Did some searching on the website this morning but could only find a bunch of people sending money TO Colombia to their girlfriends - GOOD LUCK guys!

I will have about $6k USD in hand in October he in Medellin, and need to get it back to my bank in the U.S. sometime during October or November. It needs to be there before I personally travel back to the U.S. for Christmas, so I cannot accompany the money.

Anyone have ideas or experiences regarding this? Help would be appreciated!

Send it via moneygram to a friend or relative less than $2000 at a time. No problem. Western Union's what I used. Expensive but reliable and you can pick it up anywhere.

Do you have a Colombian bank account? You could wire the money from the Colombian bank to your US bank.

Boomer...which is the most expensive? Do you have an idea on rates? USD to USD is what you have done?

Viajero123...I do have a bank account with Bancolombia, I just don't know if they will take dollars and send dollars and at what expense?!?!? Guess I should ask them.

Oh, you have cash dollars in Colombia to send to the US. That's a different story, getting rid of cash dollars in Colombia is costly in terms of exchange rate. Does money gram or Western Union take cash dollars in Colombia to do a transfer to the US?

not feasible for you to hang on to it until you return? Go to Citi Bank or another US bank and wire it. The other option is to open a CITI bank account (US branch) online. Then go to Citibank branch in Colombia, and deposit it.. I am sure you will have to convert it to pesos so you can give a pound of flesh, on the currency exchange, to somebody.

Actually I do have an account with Citibank in the US, and Bancolombia here. The problem is that my bonus from work comes in the form of USD, and obviously it is a huge waste to take it in COP at the current exchange rate. I am going home for New Years, however need that cash in the US in the November time frame to pay for a motorcycle that my father will be registering, titling and receiving for me - as it needs to be ready to ship with title in hand when I arrive and paying cash that week to buy it won't allow everything to get done in time.

TM - thanks for the offer, might consider it, nope - didn't move any product and still looking at the feasibility of the idea. How's your car situation coming?

I got a message from someone saying to find an American who has that cash available i the US but is living in Colombia, have them transfer the money to your account and you give them the USD in person at the same time. Of course, giving it to someone to take back is an option also. Guess either one has a pretty heavy risk associated and not sure if I want to deal with the stress of wondering if someone would rip me.

Will contact Bancolombia this next week and look at their options, along with WU/MG, just not sure what else is out there.

Texas- I received an email from somebody in Nigeria who said they will guarantee me $10mil USD if I will wire them about $6k USD to help them get the money out of Nigeria. Not a bad return on that investment of $6K..no? So, I don't mind forwarding that email to you...if you think they can help out!

No need to thank me now... just send a cool $1mill USD when you get your settlement....I appreciate it!!!

Seriously, I would be interested in how it works getting US dollars out of Colombia. It seems money flows into Colombia easy enough, but coming out, especially in USD, can be a challenge to do economically

bigtexas1974, your work bonus comes in USD in Colombia? I mean, do they deposit 6k USD in COP at the exchange rate, or do actually get USD bills in Colombia?

bigtexas1974 - Western union is expensieve. If the 6 grand is reported income, then the bank wire transfer is the better option. However, if the money is a cash bouns (non reported),
then the money gram works just fine, no questions ask if kept under 2 grand and the only exchange rate would be to pay for the money gram transfer in COP's.

J y L - funny shit! Yeah, it would almost be worth a shot to get the settlement, but somehow I don't think the whole settlement collection would go very well! I will post up if I find a good way to do thi.

Viajero - Yep, they give it to me in USD currency, kind of a guaranteed bonus value since they figure I would want to return home with nice cash once a year. I CAN get it in COP at the current exchange rate (which sucks) then I guess I could wire it from Bancolombia to the US at the exchange rate offered and have it then in USD, but I believe i would lose out there depending on the numbers and how they shift day to day.

bigtexas,
where and when EXACTLY you will have the 6,000 in hand in Medellin?

The best way for you to loose the least, is to the your USD paid in COP at the TRM (official exchange rate) of the day. I do not think Bancolombia or Moneygram would take actual USD bills and send them for you to the US. They will take pesos, and convert them into USD at their crappy exchange rate and send them to the US. USD bills in Colombia are exchanged into COP at low rates.
