Self Defense in Colombia

I worked as a free-lance photographer years ago. One thing I learned was this: Thieves are after your cameras? They love to rob photographers! The "why" is obvious: Expensive cameras are easy to sell on the street.

My solution? I learned to walk with a 23 inch, all-aluminum Monopod! Results? Criminals look at the metal monopod, and they visualize a quick strike to their skulls and a visit to the nearest hospital. So they leave you alone. I mean, they don't bother you at all! No catcalls, no insults...NOTHING! They are too busy thinking about the physical damage the monopod can do to them. By the time they get over their own fear, you are blocks away. That's nice...very, very nice!

Go to the BH Photo Video link below to see several monopod models. Do avoid the incredibly expensive carbon-fiber models which are too weak. Go instead for aluminum. It is much stronger and much cheaper! Another thing: Try to get a monopod with a foam handle. It will give you a good grip.

Conclusions?
Camera monopod = self-defense baton, which is perfectly legal!

Search for monopods at B&H...

Hmmmmmmm let me see...the army guys carry guns, so does the police. The guerrilleros carry guns, and the paras do too....the bandits carry guns, the robbers and the thieves carry guns...the night watchman carries a machete and a whistle...it's totally against the law to carry guns in Colombia, if you're not army, police, guerrilla ,para ,bandit or a common criminal. I'd suggest maze.

vicshere is correct, as long as you have a cedula like ID card, which says you can carry a gun, one id card per each gun, each id card will have the guns serial number on it and your cedula number.

I have had one for a couple of years, although I only carry it to the airport, when I am going to differant Cities and pick it up at the police post at the destination airport. Also when I go visit the farm.

All other times I leave it at home.

Sorry 'Bout That. I did not know you lived in Colombia and had a cedula. Thought you were coming down as a tourist.

The PPK has a lot of "James Bond" romance around it but it fires a terrible round, the 9mm Kurtz (actually a 9mm short) which is the same as a .380ACP round. Here is a good story about this round and its effectiveness or lack thereof:

http://hunting.about.com/library/weekly/aast9mmv380a.htm

Might I suggest you take a look, if you are hung up on a Walther, at the Walther Model: P99 in .40 or 9mm. It is expensive, $600/650 USD. Or give some thought to the Glock 27 in .40 cal which is very concealable and a very good personal defense weapon (about $450/500USD) or the GLOCK 33 in .357 cal. Both have excellent first round stopping power and can be carried fairly comfortably.

I am like Hunter. I have several but seldom even have them in the car. Saves a lot of explaining. The only time I really carried one was going to my finca outside if Cali. But since I got rid of that sometime ago I basically keep them for self defense in the apartment.

in the apartment Gator and Hunter,
Do you need the cedula to have a handgun in your home or apartment for self defense? Is a cedula only for concealed carrying when you are out and about?

Hunter says on Aug 28, 2004, 06:19:

Cedula You need a Colombian cedula for any legal gun in Colombia.

There are two basic types, a carrying license, which obviously means you can carry it.

The second (can't remember the name) is where you are not intending to take the gun out of a certain area, like your apt OR more likely your farm.

I assume a US citizen can not get the Colombian cedula to carry a gun.

FYI-But the Accuracy is Unknown "The legislative authority which regulates the possession of firearms by civilians is Industria Militar (INDUMIL). INDUMIL is also the legislative authority that regulates the sale of firearms and firearm supplies to civilians. Licencing Requirements: Applicants must be over 18 years of age with full citizenship and an up-to-date police record. Applicants must meet the following requirements to be granted a licence to possess firearms:

A form provided by Industria Militar must be duly completed;
Provisional or reservist military service papers must be presented;
Duly authenticated photocopies of the applicant's identity card and police record must be presented;
Proof of the need to possess weapons for the applicant's safety and protection must be provided; and
Medical certification of mental and physical fitness to use weapons must be presented; however, the staff of the Ministry of Defence, military forces and national police force are exempt from this requirement.
Persons known to be suffering from chronic alcoholism, dependence on narcotic drugs or psychotropic drugs."

I have no idea if the above requirements are still inforce or accurate. I do not have a permit because I do not carry on my person-just keep in the house/apartment or, occasionally, in the car. I did ask my brother-in-law (retired military and at one time in his career was the military police commandant of the military district-Bogotá.)

His reply was if you are a gringo watch out but he also said the percentage of people who do have a firearm with them is very, very high.

I personally never want to have to say. "El cárcel es magnífico. Mucho mejor que me apartamento." Nice jail you got. Much better than my apartment.

requirments for extranj
hey gator here the latest requirements for us no Colombian which is pretty close to a Colombian expect for military papers

1 compar el formulario
2 fotografia 3X4 a color
3 fotocopia cedula extranjeria
4 fotocopia pasdo judcial vigente autenticado (DAS)
5 certificado medico de sicologio y fisico
6 carta solicitando la compra dirigda al jefe de estado mayor
7 certificado camara de comercio o declaracion extraprocesal
8 certificado maneso de armas

this info is 3 days old

Gator the problem is they don't have a wide selection of handguns and they only have about 3 different pistols one being the Walter the other a Jericho 9mm and Barrette 9mm both big ass guns... I prefer a much smaller handgun which I can carry comfortably.... as I don't want to blow a door off a car but more of a show of force if anything....

badabrt A US citizen can get the gun license, if they get a Colombian id card and meet the requirements laid out by vicshere.

Gator, I only have the gun for self defence in my apt as well, but as far as I am aware if you shoot somebody and kill them without a gun without a license, you get a automatic jail sentance of 6 months, wether its self defence or not. As this is Colombian and you may or may not have good friends/money, maybe you can get away with it.

To Me It Would Be Easier To... your own personal sicario. You might want to check out the Beretta 8000F Cougar 9mm. Only weighs 6 oz more than the PPK and has a 10-round magazine

Gator Hey Gator need your advice.
first of all the selection for new pistols is very small almost non existence when compared to a gun shop in the US. they have a pistol made in Czech Republic which is a big bad ass 9mm ...the only small gun they have is a JERICHO 941FB .40 you can see it here
http://www.israeli-weapons.com/weapons/small_arms/jericho/Jericho.html

I really wanted the Walter but the Sergeant at the Station can't guarantee that they will get them again. Unfortunately Bogotá gets all the orders first and what ever filter down to Bucaramanga is what we get... too bad... unless I want to travel to Bogotá which don't so I am stuck with a Jericho.....anyway Gator what you think of this pistol....the Sergeant says its a good firearm and most of officers in Colombian military carry one but in 9mm
I don't really have much choice but would like your opinion before I buy it on Tuesday....thanks in advance

Go for it Anything used and issued to the Israeli Defence Forces and Israeli Police has my respect. Remember, .40 cal or 45ACP. I shot this weqapon several times in .45 APC and found it reliable, very accurate and comfortable to fire. If you do pick one up take time to run at least 200 rounds through it in practice.

While this does not meet with some thinking I will tell you this. A hand gun is never carried to scare but for selfdefense. If you are NOT willing to use it to take a life and save yours or a companion don't bother carrying.

Like the old wild west sheriff said about his gun, "I look at it as an insurance policy. I might never need it but when I do I will need it bad."
