Security on roads around Medellin

Any idea about the recent security situation between the aeropuerto at Rio Negro and the city?

Canuck 1 There should be no problems in daylight hours.

In the night, unlikely to have a problem.

The only concern I would have is a criminal taxi driver. Call for a cab, take the mini-bus or have a friend meet you.

I recently discovered the mini-bus from the airport. Its only 5000 pesos. Better than 42,000 pesos in the taxi. In the city you can sneak in the back door of the bus and give the bus driver only half the fare(500 pesos).

I can't picture a foreigner getting thru the back door of a bus to save $500. I did it a few times some years ago, when run out of money (spent the money playing marcianitos)to get back home after school.

But, I'm going to start making some assumptions here.... Which means I might actually end up making an ass out of myself ..........Thu 04 17, 2008 11:34 am

the road is now perfectly secure, but there's some manteinence going on so it's kindda difficult

there hasn't been a kidnap on that road for over 1,5 years and there's constant police presence

but as always in colombia, there's risk... just take basic precautions... like calling someone you know and giving he/her tha car's registration or something like that... or get a recommended one. i have several

Cheers

Gee, a good friend was kidnapped in January of this year on that road.

Ctg Bound says on Aug 17, 2006, 05:19:

tomtom33 I think his kidnap attempt was after he got off the road, in El Poblado?

tomtom33 says on Aug 17, 2006, 10:35:

No His cab was on the road when two guys on a moto with a gun started waving the gun at the cab. He told the cab driver, in Spanish, not to stop. The cab driver stopped, and the gunman entered the cab. The gunman took his watch and wallet. Then the cab took off going back up the mountain with my friend in the cab.

When the cab slowed, he jumped out and ran. He thinks that the cab driver was in on it.

My friend owns a house in Poblado but the kidnapping was no where near Poblado.
