Secretaria de Salud de Medellin never ceases to amaze me

All my restaurant emploees had their required medical exams. The exam checked their throats, noses and fingernails for bacterias. But now the health inspector is looking for another exam...they now want the employees feces checked for bacteria. Seriously! I wanted to drop my drawers and dump one in front of her and tell the inspector to go ahead and check it. Its a get the exams done or get closed down deal, so I went to the lab clinic to see how we can accomplish this. The employee needs to bring in a sample to the lab and for $7 mil, it will be tested. Lovely.

tell her that maybe the emplyees might not submit their own sample and that she should "take measures" to ensure it comes from the right person.

That's incredible. As an employee I wouldn't do that. I would quit first. Absolutely ridiculous.

Honestly, I don't understand. You have to take a bag of your shit to the lab?????

Is this normal? Do all the other fast food restuarant employees have to do the same thing?

Actually to clarify, the lab requested they bring in a bag of their morning dump. I feel like a troll but I am 100% dead serious. My cook and I have been laughing in stitches all morning long. We wondered if theyll issue a carne (ID) with a foto of the employee giving a thumbs up along side their bag of ca-ca. I told the inspector that this exam is degrading to the employees.

I dont think you guys understand how redicullously strict these people are. An employee brings their lunch and puts it in the refrigerator. We got cited for the lunch being in a black plastic bag which is a no-no because one cannot see whats inside. When you eat out, many times you get utensils with wood handles..Any utensil with wood is a violation too. Everything needs to be covered. You cannot have a ream of plastic cups in its plastic sleeve sitting out, it needs to be in a container such as rubbermaid with a cover or the inspector will confiscate it. The list goes on and on

Is there a regulation they can point to that requires such an exam? Or perhaps a documented outbreak of something and the regulators can expand their powers almost at will?

This does seem strange and very invasive. Plus, you know there's a million kiosks, ambulatores (sp?) and roadside joints that escape the most basic inspections because they're going overboard with a business like yours.

Case in point, the negros on the corner that cook empanadas (and have a license to do it) on the weekends on top of dirt with no water and use two blackened adobe blocks and for heat, burning waste wood covered in whatever paint, varnish or other chemicals. Never change the cooking oil, leave the soda pops in the nasty igloo cooler overnight in a pool of water as the ice melted. All on top of a wood table that they leave on the side of a vigilante shack during the week taking on all the weather elements. When cooking or hand making the empanadas, they dont wear hats, dont use disposable plastic gloves. Yummy.

This is completely recockulos!

I have frequented many paisa owned restaurants that double as roach motels. I have ventured back into the kitchen to see how the food is prepared and can only say that I would only recommend anyone doing so after eating, otherwise you won't be staying for "la hora del almuerzo."

Only in Medellin.... if you're a gringo.

id take this to the alcalde....it's pure bull shit. haulin around feces. gimme a break. somebody's got shit in more than a bag. especially in a place like colombia where a visit to just about any kitchen is a measure of 'a work in progress'. i have many, many friends who have businesses (restaurants) in medallo, envigado, las palmas and up country and i've never heard one of them mention that. they don't even do that here where the health dept. is like the gestapo (florida).
