Second best daily newspaper a few years ago El Espectador

Amigos de Colombia

Will be out again daily. It was only Sundays since 2001 due to financial stress. It is daily again since May 11, 2008.

In 1994 El Espectador was considered one of the best 8 Newpapers in the world.

The New York Times (United States)
Financial Times (United Kingdom)
Izvestia (Russia)
People's Daily (China)
Al Ahram (Egypt)
Asahi Shimbun (Japan)
Times of India.

El Espectador was neutral but the Director stated in 2007 that he was happy with Alvar Uribe´s Goverment.

The People's Daily? The best at what? Serving up press releases and fake statistics from the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party?

Simon says on May 12, 2008, 21:26:

The Chinese paper also struck me as an odd choice.

What's next? Cuba's 'Granma'?

HERE'S SIMON!!!!

Tinto (Moderator) says on May 12, 2008, 21:30:

It looks like Le Monde picked one paper from eight large-population countries. Izvestia is an odd choice, too. Maybe there was a brief period of press freedom in the early 1990s, but Izvestia (according to Wikipedia) is now owned by Gazprom/The Kremlin/Putin and has long had close ties to the post-Communist Russian government.

I've always liked El Espectador. Unfortunately, there web server often tends to get very slow and sometimes is unreachable from the US. I understand that they are a smaller paper, but you never see El Tiempo have those kinds of problems. In fact, I have more hassles trying to view the El Espectador site than those of small local papers from Southern Colombia.

Simon says on May 13, 2008, 09:53:

Interesting you say that CG, because I've just realized I like El Espectador's website layout a lot more than El Tiempo's.

HERE'S SIMON!!!!

ColombianoGringo says on May 13, 2008, 10:00:

I do like the site, it's just that I've often been unable to even access it. In general, I like the paper as an alternative to El Tiempo. They seem to be less about "farandula" and other BS.

Tinto (Moderator) says on May 13, 2008, 10:09:

In a story that Simon posted, it looks like El Espectador has been a money-losing vanity project for Santo Domingo. Maybe it's a good sign for the future of the economy if he's going to pump in more money and try to make it a profitable daily paper. Alternatively, even rich guys do dumb things and maybe it will turn into an even larger vanity project....
