Search: ST Santa Marta beach rental

Am I crazy to think that I will be able to find a short term rental in Santa Marta on the beach with a nice kitchen, A/C, balcony, maid service and internet connection for about $800USD per month? Here in Buenos Aires it is very possible (actually quite easy but without the beach). I want to kind of drop out and be a beach bum for a few months while and I have only been able to find a few internet sights that list short term rentals in this area. The ads are not very descriptive (usually don't mention prices) and there are not many photos. Does anyone who is there now or has been there recently have any ideas about how to go about finding a place? Are there any potential rip-off scams that I should be worried about?

Eric, Yes, and NO!!!!! not with all your parameters, especially maid service and internet connection (use the internet cafes). Your other BIG problem is you will be crossing over the high season for part of that time, June 25 to July 25. Example of one place: 2 bed/two baths, two blocks from the beach, low season 50.000 COP per day (say 650 USD a month) to 150.000COP a day from June 25/July 25 or 60 USD a day or almost 2000 USD for high season and the place is jammed. This is not for Santa Marta proper but for an area called El Rodadero about 8 k west of Santa Marta. Which do you mean? We go often from Bogotá and have looked extensively for an apartmento. (BTW, Mrs. Gator is now wavering AGAIN about a move from Bogotá to Santa Marta (El Rodadero)

Here is the name of our real estate agent: Luz Polanco, carrera 2 #5-162, Apt 802, 095 422-8597, cell 315 734-9454, she may help but she only works El Rodadero and speaks no English. What are you going to do about a visa?

Anyone else please feel free to dive into the water and help.

Visa I am a U.S. citizen and I was under the impression that I do not need a visa to enter the country as a tourist and that I would be able to remain in the country for 90 days. Am I wrong about this? Also if I rented an apartment at the beginning of June wouldn't it still be the low season. Would they try to change the rate in the middle of the lease?

"Am I wrong about this." Yes, You will Get.... in all probability,30/60 sixty days on original entry. A tourist entry visa is the stamp DAS puts in your passport which you must have. It is a visa stamp. You can get 180 days on that stamp but you must renew at the local DAS office when the number of days originally stamped in your passport are up. There is a charge for each extension and you will likely only be give 30 days at a time. There is no guarantee on the number of days.

"Would they try to change the rate in the middle of the lease?" What lease-do you have any idea of the problems in getting a lease and you will NOT get one short term-at best a month to month rate? You will likely have to have one or two Colombian cosign ány lease with you. I have no doubt that NO ONE will give up 30 of the most lucrative rental days of the year for you so do not count on that.

High season Out of curiosity, what is special about June 25th to July 25th? I thought that was considered low season (too damn hot) for much of the Caribbean...?

Basically... high seasons in Colombia are December 15 to January 15; Holy Week(Traditional Religious and many companies are closed and schools out.) and June 25 to July. Biggest school breaks take place during these times.

BTW it's ALWAYS hot on the Caribbean, Throw in the humidity index and it feels like 95/98 Most rain in Sept, Oct, Nov.

Santa Marta about the same but less rain-very arid.

Not Really Relevant and.. what does Independence Day have to do with it??

Much of the rates are tied to holidays for the kids. Or big national holidays like Christmas and Easter. Schools in Valle, Cauca, Nariño etc..etc. are on what is called the “B calendar” with a September to June school year. The A "calendar”, which runs from February to November is basically Medellin, Bogotá and that area. Their summer break is not as long but as best as I can remember it's about three weeks. The colleges vary like U de Antioquia is June 27/July 10. Local events, like Miss Cololombia in Cartagena, will also raise rates.
