Hi, I'm planning on travelling to Colombia in May and I'd like to get an idea of the travel costs so I'm looking at either renting an apartment or staying at a hotel.
I'm thinking about checking out Cartagena, Bogota and Cali. I'd like to know what are the advantages to renting an apartment in Colombia vs staying at a hotel.
I usually prefer renting an apartment when I travel, as I did recently in Buenos Aires. There I only paid $28USD/night for a decent 500 square foot apartment in the centre. I'm guessing prices in Colombia are a little bit higher, and I'm prepared to pay up to $40-50/night. As I'm planning on travelling for maybe 2 months I need to be a bit frugal.
If I were to spend $40-50/night on either a hotel or an apartment, what would be the better choice???? Also are most of the apartments safe and do they have good security? What about leaving your valuables inside them?
Thanks!
Mike

msfior says on Jan 29, 2006, 12:59: safest apartments What do you guys think is safer in Colombia... to stay in a gated, super secure building surrounded by armed guards, or stay in a modest, middle-class building with normal security??? I feel like it's best to stay low-key, and staying in a place resembling camp x-ray might make you a little more of a target for criminals, but I don't know what it's like in Colombia. I always try to blend in when I travel, and definitely not do anything that would make me look like I'm wealthy. Is it really necessary to stay in a place with armed guards and mad security if you can blend in and not stand out as a tourist?

Used to be quite run down but they have slapped on a paint job etc and looks ok - it is 280,000 pesos a week or 68,000 pesos a night. Has bedroom cable tv, fridge, stove bathroom etc.
