The master of Vallenato Rafael Escalona has passed. If you are not familiar with Escalona's work, you are missing out on some wonderful music. Some of Carlos Vives' most popular songs are actually by Escalona. He played Rafa in a Colombian novela that brought him to musical fame.

It is not included on any of the Carlos Vives Escalona CDs, even though it was in the novela. Anyway, a friend of mine was hoping that I had it and I do not. Prolific Colombian composer and performer Rafael Escalona has died of cancer in a Bogota hospital at the age of 81.
He was best known for creating the country's vallenato folk music.
