"se lo robaron"

So I asked the cashier at the JV cafe why they didn't have a 'tips' jar any more. I was thinking the owners must have made a policy against it or something.

Unfortunately, the answer was "se lo robaron".

But even though that must be very annoying, she said it with a smile.

I seem to say to myself all the time here, 'these people just can't get a break'.

it does happen everywhere, I've heard of it in Canada too.

But at least in Canada the staff make a decent wage, it's no big deal. But here I think these kids finally get a chance to make a bit of extra money, and poof, it's gone.

Que lastima!

Kat I think there was something on the news over here about an old guy who was had been a soldier collecting money in his jar in remembrance of the vitims of the war here and someone came up and took it off him, there was outrage about that - people over here have the opportunity to work they have no excuse....

It does make me think. In Canada/UK/USA there is NO excuse to steal anything, there are jobs for everyone if they want, and a pretty complete safety net for people who are ill or homeless.

Sometimes when a rather dangerous looking street person (here in Bog or in BsAs) asks me for money and I say no, they give me a pretty nasty look, and I can't help but wonder if they don't have some justification, ONLY because they really might not have any other option?

Obviously some thieves are just bad right through, and I have no sympathy for them, but what about some of these displaced people with families to feed?

I'm would never resort to violence myself, never, but if I was in their position, I'd surely try to steal something to feed myself or my family.

Pod - has someone ever begged from you in colombia, they have from me and I couldn't say no, even if it was something small, I bought this little guy a burger once as he kept winking at me as I was eating mine, as if to ask for some, he made me laugh and I can't forget how he looked at me, you could tell he was a good person and so cheerful despite being poor, he thanked me..
but I do feel sorry for the ones over here, because if you are as unfortunate to become homeless and not have an address you cannot claim social benefits or get a job so it becomes a vicious cycle, also alot of people come from messed up homes here and have been traumatised and do drugs and alcohol due to that, but yes when you compare the two I think colombian kids even with the same circumstances would make it alot further......

A few years back the Brazilian bishops issued a statement reassuring their flock that it wasn't a sin to steal food if you had to to eat.

yes of course la mona, all the time, and some lucky guy just timed it right by asking me for something this very second (I am in an outdoor cafe in bogotá) so I gave him what few coins I had.

we've been over this discussion before, but I still don't know what to think.

To me, it seems there are people who legitimately need and deserve help, and then there are others who are just scammers or who put their children to work for them.

I just wish I could tell the difference.

I don't think so either in some situations at least, food should not be denied to anyone

In the past I never would have agreed with that kalder, because it was hard for me to understand how some people really didn't have a choice.

Now, I can see it.

I'm definitely NOT an altruist, but for my own selfish reasons I'd feel better if there were not a lot of resentful, desperate people on the streets where I live.

GIB -

Yes I know that they are looking to catch the eye of the person that looks the softest but I can't resist, mind you I did get a little tougher toward the end of my stay...I know they can work as well but if I have it spare I don't mind...I was with a big group of people (in Periera) and this little girl came and sought me out, out of everyone, because she knows who is more likely to give to her, but how can you look into that beautiful little girls eyes and give her nothing knowing you have plenty? Even if she is sent by someone else....

I know you have good experience and I listen to you for the trip I am planning, your tips and advice but on this one I have to...at least the kids

I don't trust foundations too much

If it was for me I would and probably will adopt over there one day....
