Last Friday and today my stepson had half day classes. Tomorrow no classes. This is the norm for just about every week. Add to that the way too many holidays. Normal class is just 6 hours total. What a way to educate kids and teach them consistencey. No wonder so many of the kids are lost. This carries on into adulthood. It's not their fault!

Mononoke28 says on Nov 26, 2007, 15:22: It's true that Colombia has way too many unnecessary holidays but to see a non-consistent school week is not the norm, at least not in our case. Colombia's education level far exceeds the education children get in the States even with all those stupid holidays. Time to switch schools... ! Diana 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Lowell says on Nov 26, 2007, 16:19: I did and this is suposed to be one of the better ones. I'm happy with everything else though. To make up for the lack of hours, a lot of homework is assigned. Often 4-5 hours. That's a bit much for an 11 yr old. School 7 - 12:30, lunch and a bit of rest until 2, homework until diner and sometimes after it, maybe an hour or 2 of playtime, bed at 9 and lights out at 9:30, and up again at 6 the next day. Lowell says on Nov 26, 2007, 16:20: On extra days off I have him practice his writing and brush up on subjects needing attention for 2-3 hours. The poor kid only gets to sleep in on Saturdays as Mom like to go to the 9 am mass. Alfred E. Newman. "What. Me Worry?" 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

msaucey says on Nov 26, 2007, 16:48: Sounds about right Lowell... So, technically it sounds like their giving your son a break... Wish it was like that in the states, I don't know how many times I complained about my younger cousins never getting any homework... Heck, even when I was in school, I think I had about 30 minutes worth of homework, I didn't see the 2-3 hours of studying until college... Which I would have had that earlier on to prepare my system for the shock.... The trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed. - CS Lewis 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Swinn88 says on Nov 26, 2007, 17:21: From What I have seen 1st hand the kids are more often not in school than in school. If the teacher is sick or can't make it to school for whatever reason then there is no school for the student. Colombias level of education doesn't even come close to the U.S. unless of course your talking about private schools that cater to a very small percentage of the population. My personal opinion is that Lowell is correct and it why many (but not all) children are lost.
