Scenic Daytrips/Overnight Trips from Medellin

Can anyone recommend some nice pueblos or other scenic areas that are doable as safe daytrips or 1 night trips from Medellin via bus (or possibly taxi, but I know I won't be renting a car)?

I have been to Santa Fe de Antioquia so would like to maybe head out in a different direction this time. Thought about the Eje Cafetero but am wondering if that type of atmosphere can be duplicated slightly closer to Medellin...

Specific recommendations on nice fincas or country hotels to stay at in these pueblos would be great.

Oriente This is the standard weekend route for many paisas:
Take the Las Palmas highway and go to La Fe dam, then continue to El Retiro, then go to the Llanogrande area, then go to Rionegro and then drive back to Medellin.

More ?s on Oriente Are there any nice places to stay overnight in the Oriente?

Without access to a private car is touring the area still doable? Bus to one of the larger towns (Rionegro?) and then hire a local taxi for the day? Do it all by taxi from Medellin?

La Ceja I was in La Ceja 2 weeks which is about 45 minutes from Mdellin. Very nice little typical Colombian mountain town. It was a very interesting time -- I also was in Santa Fe which is down outside of the mountains where it is very hot since you are close ot sea level. Santa Fe had several resorts one called Hostel Real (sp?) which is ranked by them as 5 star all inclusive for around 67 USD/night..

Guatape & El Peñol Want to update this thread and recommend Guatape. El Peñol shows up in guidebooks but not the town of Guatape itself. Went there as a daytrip and both the town and El Peñol come highly recommended. Took about 2 hours to get there by bus from Medellin's Terminal Norte. Make sure to venture past El Peñol (well worth the climb) and actually see the town of Guatape too.

Guatape is a beautiful lakeside pueblo; has boat rides that you can take out on the lake or rent paddleboats, zip line ride (we didn't partake in that); some neat little restaurants on the malecon; and a beautiful church on the main plaza a couple blocks up from the lake. The famous stone El Peñol is about 10-15 minutes away from Guatape town by colectivo jeep or taxi. Buses from Medellin pass the stone first before ending up in the town of Guatape.
