Sarcasm verses Truth, Help verses, Hindrance

In many post here over the years a lot of Great advice has been given to a lot of people. It often contains a lot of Sarcasm that often superseeds the subject. Some will pick up on mispelled words to make them look smart. Some live in Columbia S.C. It is a simple mistake made by many. Yet the topic becomes the mispelled word. C.O.L.O.M.B.I.A
Others offer help that cannot be bought at any price because it contains experience not hearsay. Stay with these people. I hope that the new people here understand that this site along with many others contain help that Hinders. I suggest that Peter open a special area here that says
" I am a jerk and offer nothing constructive so do not listen to me at any cost"
A simple request for help turns in to subjects totally different from the subject. We are human, however. We all make mistakes but wouldn't it be great if people would stop the Sarcasm, offer the Truth and try not to Hender the request for help?
This is my opinion and not intended to hurt anyone.

My point exactly GG. They are mistakes we all make in our lives and yet so many people feel the need to correct the smallest things that actually have no bearing on anything much less the subject..I made the same spelling mistake years ago and expect to do it again. To all those reading we do know how to spell COLOMBIA and it sounds exactly the same when a U is used

i was thinking about all this, sonny, and what came to me is shopping at home depot or lowes. you go in, and there's countless workers who will help you. some are like old friends, helpful, with hands and advise as well experience. THEN, there are always a hand full of pricks and almost pricks. i don't count them out, just cause they're ass holes, they're part of the human equation. i just kind of deal with them--if i have to--and get on with the day.

here on peter's wonderful site, having been around as long as i have been and seen so many different players, with as many different attitudes and opinions, i've almost--not quite--but almost become insulated to some of the more irritating. example, some upstart drug my wife into a thread and i instantly went to critical stage and explained in no uncertain terms how deadly serious life is in colombia and that one should always remember that...i did elaborate a little more. so, i'm not completely without sensative responses and know full well what a pain some can be.

so, for myself, i take the good with the bad and hope that both sides are able to profit a bit from the experience and opinions of others. there's lots of good advise from folks who've not been to colombia en re life as i read them as good players in general. and then again there are those who are on short fuses, antagonistic, insulting and sarcastic. for these i often try to mediate and bring them around. for others it's more often than not, not possible.

so, what to do? it aint sunny at the beach everyday. some days there's a storm. enjoy it.

Douglas, there are times when I let some of these humans get to me more so when they attack my family or the efforts of others to make a point or ask a question.. Their worthless lives are focused around makeing others feel as stupid as they are.But...........having been here sense Jan. 2005 I have seen a bit of everything and I have learned to take that good with the bad. I am thankful there are more good then bad here but we all like to make a funny at times and some threads open that door very wide and it is hard not to respond with ones first thought. I do bite my lip, however.
This was not a post to open any doors for bad because it would surly point that person out but it was simp[ly a statement to attempt to be positive about the good we all have found here. It is a Sunny day for most of us. Retired and moving to Colo(u)mbia what ever lifts your skirt:) The rest I feel for because they cannot do what I am about to do so let them write away. have a sunny day

Sonny, names are important, and include signs of respect.

You probably don't consider spelling important, but many others do.

If I called you Sunni all day long, would you point out the mistake to me, or just let it ride? How about if I called you directly by your surname, for example "hey Jones...". Would that grate on you at all? On many people, it would.

"Remember that a person's name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language." -- Dale Carnegie, 1936

So if someone points out to you a mistake in the way you say their country's name, what's so bad about that? You say it sounds the same, but it does not sound the same in Spanish.

People correct the misspelling immediately, because it's a simple mark of respect to spell the country's name correctly.

Sonny says on Sep 21, 2008, 16:44:

PEDRO because I dont look for the mistakes I feel no need to point them out. I choose not to be offended. That is my choice. Some people Just point out mistakes and have nothing to add to the topic. I do consider spelling important, however, I do understand when fingers move faster then the brain and mistakes happen. Thus the word MISTAKE!
If you knew me and called me Sunni I would think nothing of it. Not know me and using the name Sunni , I would think your talking about someone in a different country.
When it is necessary to spell correctly then I would use great caution to do so, but just to point out the error and add nothing constructive beyond the correction is worth nothing. A true sign of respect comes from pointing out the error and adding something to the topic to help answer the question the writer asked. I might add that it is NOT and I repeat NOT a sign of respect to point out the errors only. You have proven my point here. The word Colombia in the USA is spelled Columbia like the city. A simple error and nothing more, yet you chose to expound on this error with your own.
"Remember that a person's name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language." -- Dale Carnegie, 1936
In that I have taken this course I might add that the word Gringo is not a great word to use for us is it? We are talking about a U used rather then an O. It has nothing to do with a persons name so this topic has changed right?
You have changed the subject PEDRO. No place in my post did I mention a persons name. Good job and again you proved my point. I mean no disrespect toward you nor did I mean to insult anyone. Just my opinion and I fought for the right to write it.

brother pedro...not to add redundancy to redundancy, however, just to point out the importance to an american in the use of the spelling, c.o.l.u.m.b.i.a, the femenine image of the united states of america is 'lady columbia'...she is the mast head of our nations tall ship she is used in all early documents and currency of this great land. so when folks use the "u" spelling, it is with pride, not ridicule, nor attempt to slight and comes with a life of usage. and the pronounciation is basically the same unless you're one of those who finds charm in correcting ones pronunciation as well. now after living in colombia for 20 years, i don't think anyone other than my wife ever corrected me on pronunciation. so, if some gringo new to colombia, spells it columbia and even accents the pronunciation accordingly, don't take him/her to task, nor even bother correcting them. simply go on and when useing the word, spell it and pronounce it correctly. that should accomplish the desired end with out anger or false pride. too, it makes friendship infinitely more easy and enjoyable.

It might be nice and useful to pin some of the posts and catagorize them for reference.

No it doesn't.

"I choose not to be offended." Sometimes you do otherwise you wouldn't bitch about it all the time. Everytime I read a post by you it always has to deal with how people are rude to you and are jerks. So people have fun sometimes, it's like a bunch of friends. When they do it to me I take account who is doing it and go from there. Like I said previously, maybe you look for this situation (after all you started a thread about it...).

"Just my opinion and I fought for the right to write it."
Really how did you fight for it? Services or something?

"...there are times when I let some of these humans get to me more so when...", "...Their worthless lives are focused around makeing others feel as stupid as they are."

Holy crap but you sound like a freaking lunatic. I mean no offense when I say I'm glad you are retiring. Get some rest and maybe you'll calm down. I used to do psych testing and some of your posts are right up there, believe me.

Thanks professor, Your 100% correct. I have a masters degree in Criminal justice and I think after reading some of my own post I have fallen prey to my own background. It is never my intention to insult anyone or hurt anyone but I think your right. It is time for me to retire in peace and take a break. Thanks again.

"F" every stressfull thing that ever crossed your path from the day you get off the plane, (and ignore the one's coming albeit they'll be fewer) until you stop breathing.

Now is your time. I don't know how long you worked for it but as long as I know someone on this planet is now having a good time then I'm a bit happier myself (still slumming it out here). Don't take "good riddance" in the usual negative way... the US is now, or soon to be "rid" of another 9-5er eeking out a living for a few days vacation a year - that IS good.

When you retire you all to often do not know what to do with your time. I am not used to sleeping till 7am. For years it was up at 4:30am and off to work. Then you work through lunch with something at your desk, and then go home when finished around 6 or 7pm.
Saturdays off???? I used to dream about being off all weekend. Now I am and it does take some getting used to but guess what..................................... it just ain't that hard to do.
Setting at a computer reading all the crap that is written and I must admit some was mine, you fall pray to the trash trap. You tend to get so pissed of with people that know everything, insult, lie that you can't help responding. Then you realize you have just done what they have done. My apologies to all that I offended.
I am packed now. Just waiting on some legal issues to be complete and then there is an airplane at Orlando International Airport that will wisk me away from the fire line and political blaw blaw, alone with I wish I were in Colombia ,not with a "U", writings.
I have been here longer them most, I owe it to myself to enjoy Colombia in every way possible. I have a great family, good friends, now an income for the rest of my life and no worry about having to get a visa. I will stay in touch here with most of my friends and if there is any Truth about Medellin I can offer just ask. Hearsay is a lot like a FART you can smell it, but you just never see it. There is a lot of farting going on here now. Cheers to all

I have reached the rip old age that wine women and dance do not matter to much any more. Now I look at family, friends and sleep. I get up in the morning now and before I put my feet on the floor, I kick start my motor to insure it is running. I am lucky, however, I still have my hair, eyes, and teeth so I am not to bad off. Time now to just relax and enjoy and think about all these people that WANT to be where I am in a few weeks. Still getting up at 5am, going to work, going to lunch, coming home around 6pm. Eating dinner, watch some TV and then to bed doing the same old thing the next day. For all of you. I will think about you. >>>>> I P R O M I S E

I do believe Sonny is my favorite lunatic. Tomtom33 said something like, "work is an illness that can be overcome". Do your best down there!

Let's see, income, eyes, teeth and hair!!!!! Colombianas will be all over you. You say that doesn't interest you anymore, but now that you'll be stress-free and be able to sleep and rest up good..... the scratchin and a-sniffin might start up again!

bufalo,
I may kick start my engine each morning but it still starts. I do have a bit of a problem filling in the time I now have. Seems strange a bit but afternoon naps from say 11am till maybe 4pm sounds good. I never have been a wine drinker, I have a good woman and dancing is OK but with the same woman. That is what has made me happy. I enjoy you BUF and I look forward to reading your ideas and comments as usual. Your a good person

Thanks!

Didn't know you had a partner - all the more enjoyment for the two of you down there. I stay with my sweetie too, makes life a lot less complicated (although she's a colombiana so always jealous anyway).

Get used to them afternoon naps for down there. It took me a while I always wanted to go out and about, but everyone else was sleeping. Then again Medellin is a bit more hustle.

Enjoy!
