Thanks for the nice pics. Rodondo beach is in California. You must be speaking of Rodadero beach.

Yeah I'm a stickler bastard.

How is the night life there - on the actual beach or in the little bars/hotels surrounding the beach?

is it ON the beach? Are you steps from the sand? Can you see the ocean from your table/bar?

No big nightlife there during low season. But the vallenato groups goes on 'til late with the drunks on the beach during the weekend.
During high season, you cannot almost walk. To avoid.

Good vibes at La Puerta in Santa Marta, Fridays and Saturdays. Mix music, from Salsa to Electronica, students, hippies, euro trash and the occasional prepago. Cheap prices and good Mojitos.

A couple of fancy places, like Burukuka (a shot from up there between Tejas' photos) and La Escollera, but overall a pretty laid back lazy atmosphere.

If you love sea and nature, Santa Marta is for you. If you love nightlife, go to Cartagena.

Not really on the beach so you don't get the sand but it a small little enclave with that warm local spirit. The people are very friendly there and make you feel quite at home.

Thanks Brians, that answers my question. I was wondering about nightlife on the beach - namely are there beachbars and places to eat and drink that are open on the beach for a few hours after the sun goes down.

Roci, there are many bars where you can sit down on front of a beach. Or you can just get a chair and sit in front of the sea and let a vendor fueling you with your favourite rom or beer.

Brians says on Feb 21, 2008, 09:31:

Roci the quality of the food leaves a little to be desired and you probably want to eat there as I think they have different prices for takeout but it is as close to real Santa Marta as you can find.

No, slguy, I do not have any link. But you can make a search on Mercado Libre. As http://listado.mercadolibre.com.co/_CategID_1474_PriceMax_hasta_PriceM...

Getting there to look for a place, you'll be disappointed for the quality of buildings and maintenance. Rodadero is estrato 6, but roads, pavements etc. are in a worse condition than a barrio on the hill in Medellin. Thanks to the wonderful political class and management of the coast.

Is that dump the narrator stays at in the Fruit Palace still around? Last time I was there, it looked to be languishing into a state of dissolute rot. Just the way some of the dregs who were staying there seemed to like it.
