Who knows when they will have the Fiesta the Sancochos (Colombian Stew Festivals) in Santa Elena... I heard it was this Sunday.

Its a great time to see the silleteros preparing for the flower festival.

This SUNDAY... SANCOCHO cooking festival in SANTA ELENA. DIA DE LOS SANCOCHOS is coming. 1 TIME A YEAR DURING THE FLOWER FESTIVAL.

You can catch buses in El Centro to Santa Elena, go up in bus, or motorcycle. However if you plan on drinking all day i advise taxi, or bus (probably 3 to 5 mil pesos but dont quote me on that).

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED if you like Colombian Stew. There will be varieties of stew served. Sancocho varies in flavor depending on what part of the country makes the stew. It can be with chicken, beef, pork, or fish, or a combination thereof. This cook off had almost 40 different vendors of sancocho in the feria de las floras AKA....FLOWER FESTIVAL 2007.

SANTA ELENA IS ON A MOUNTAIN TOP DIRECTLY OVER MEDELLIN. AT OVER 8000 FEET, CLEAN AIR, MOUNTAIN TOP FARMERS GETTING READY TO BRING THEIR FLOWERS TO THE FLOWER FESTIVAL. Good daytime trip, secure for worried gringos, lots of food and drinks. fresh moutain air...dont forget to bring a jacket as it can get cold but usually during the day its nice and warm.

will post more info about the buses as the weekend gets closer.

its only going to be a few thousand pesos or so to catch the bus. normaly the buses charge 1,300 pesos but with the festival will charge a bit more.

Cali2005, thank you for posting this thread and for the Flower Festival ad.
In Colombia sancocho is more like a soup than a stew. In the states one can buy beef stew for the microwave, but yeah a stew is dry vs. colombian sancocho, the soup has a delicious broth made with chicken, beef or pork. We have sancocho de gallina, de cola, de res...
Here I post some examples and a picture of "sancocho de cola" which I had when I visited Houston.

Sancocho de Gallina
A typical soup from Cali, Sancocho de Gallina takes the meaning of chicken soup to another level. This hearty soup contains chicken, plantains, yucca, potatoes, and plenty of other tasty ingredients. You will not want to miss out on this chicken soup if traveling to the region.

Sancocho de Cola Lg $9.95; Med $7.50
Ox tail is the main ingredient in this formidable bowl of soup. Served with chunks of green plátano, yuca, and potatoes. Includes rice, your choice of Colombian or green Salad and Arepa.

Sancocho de Pollo Lg $8.95; Med $6.95
Comes with chicken leg and thigh, chunks of plantains, yucas & potatoes. Includes rice and your choice of Colombian or green Salad.

Sancocho de Gallina (Chicken Soup)

Ingredients
chicken stock (1 and 1/2 qts.)
1 yucca, peeled and cut into 1"x1"x1" pieces
2 plaintains, peeled, halved, and sliced into thirds longitudinally
2 red potatoes, peeling optional, cut into chunks
3 whole chicken breast, skinned and quartered with bones left on.
juice from two lemons
cumin, 1 tsp
scallions, 1 bunch
cilantro, 1 bunch
roux (2 T all-purpose flour and 2 T buter, mixed and microwaved for 30 seconds into a yellowish sludge)
salt and pepper

In one cup of chicken stock, simmer scallions, cilantro, and cumin for a few minutes. Set it aside till cool, then process it into a smooth, green-colored flavoring element to be added to the final soup. In the remaining 1 and 1/4 quarts of chicken stock, simmer the quartered, skinned chicken breasts. Particulate scum which floats off the chicken breasts as they start to cook may be skimmed off with a ladle, and discarded. The chicken will take about an hour to cook. As the chicken starts to simmer, add cut-up, peeled yucca, and cut-up potatoes. You may continue to skim off scum after the yucca and potatoes are in the soup. About a half hour from completion time, add cut-up plaintains. Plaintains are more delicate, and require less cooking time that other elements of the soup. 10 minutes before completion time, add the processed scallions-cilantro-cumin, and the juice from 2 lemons. Add roux to "bind" the soup, stirring to mix it well. Make sure the potatoes and yucca are cooked to softness, and examine a piece of chicken to check for doneness. If overcooked, the yucca, potato, and plaintain disintegrate, but their rich flavors remain. Add salt and pepper to taste.

It seems that most the restaurants have "international food". Some of them have the "comida typica, but nothing jumps out at me as spectacular.

Look for Plate of the day specials. Plato del dia around Medellin, and ask for the Bandeja de Paisa.
