San Lorenzo (Ecuador) to Tumaco (Colombia)

did any of you arrive in Colombia by boat from Ecuador? how does this work?
We like to take the train form Ibarra to Lorenzo and from there we want to cross the border
to Colombia, is it safe? We arrive about Jan 7th 2008.
