I'm in total agreement with GIB and also suggest staying at Tamacá (Cra 2 No 11A-98...tel...422.7015...El Rodadero STA Marta.)

Thanks for the advice now looking at Marazul or San Luis there is a nice difference in price over 150.00 dollars for three nights..San Luis is lower and the beach seems just as nice..

Sol Caribe campo... the worst food ever tried in Colombia.

"I am a citizen of the most beautiful nation on earth. A nation whose laws are harsh yet simple, a nation that never cheats, which is immense and without borders, where life is lived in the present."

I've probably mentioned this before, but my two cents on the Sunrise:

- It's owned by the national government (narco seizure) and operated by GHL Hoteles
- The huge building you see in the pictures is about half hotel and half condos or time shares
- The pool and the dock are large and nice
- The beach is tiny but that wasn't a deciding factor for me. When you want to hang out on a real beach, throw your things in a bag and take a nice stroll or a short taxi ride to the main beach area. That's where the action is -- it's fronted by restaurants, small hotels, "Rastas" trying to sell you trinkets and dope by the sea wall, new retail complexes, etc
- It has one of the more popular nightclubs on the island IN the hotel
- Can't comment on the food. Didn't eat in the hotel.
- The room I had was huge. Full sized living room with a full bathroom, adjoining bedroom with a king size bed, large balcony, a swimming pool size (OK, I'm exaggerating) bathtub/jacuzzi in the bedroom up on a pedestal, a very large bathroom with two sinks, huge glass shower and acres of tile and marble. I felt like a narco kingpin. Just for fun, I called up the front desk and they made arrangements to off a couple of my enemies.

Make sure you take a walk through the main commercial streets. They're not very pretty, but it's kind of amusing (at least the first time) to see so many stores selling the same fake Victoria's Secret lotions and creams, all types of electronics, small kitchen appliances and various gadgets for the home.

I have heard some terrible firsthand stories about the Sunrise. We stayed at Caribe Campo which has a much more "country" feel. In my opinion, this place has the most beautiful views on the island. It is not directly on the beach so you have to take a five minute shuttle to their beach club. Most of the hotel beaches are lame. You should definitely check out Johnny Cat.

You can see some pics of the Caribe Campo and the view from our room at http://www.flickr.com/photos/colombianogringo/sets/72157600406722530/

The couple in the room next to us stayed at the Sunrise on their previous visit, only to have the A/C flood their room. I have also heard of plumbing problems with really stinky bathrooms. This is apparently limited to certain parts of the hotel, but I was not willing to risk it.

The Decamerons are apparently nice, but the reservations for dinner can be quite a hassle. You apparently need to stand in line at 8am to reserve a spot for the next evenings dinner.

Peace,
CG

BTW, for good seafood, check out El Rincon de la Langosta. Any cabbie will know where it is. It isn't cheap, but right on the water and the food is good.

Johnny Cat=Johnny Cay for those of you keeping score at home.

ColombianoGringo says on Jul 29, 2007, 10:07:

No Miguel. They should really check out Johnny Cat. It is much better than Johnny Cay.

I am down to Marazul now the SanAndreasNobleHouse looks interesting very small and quiet but not much information on this place..www.sanandresnoblehouse.com.

Marazul I think will be perfect..and want to try island restaurant which will be nice..

San Luis?

When we were there a couple of years ago, San Luis was where they seemed to stash all the pasty-white, extremely overweight gringos/euro-travelers. We figured they kept them there as a way of trying to hide them because San Luis is a ways out of town. I can't speak to the hotel itself, we were just passing by on a quadrimoto.

San anandres noblehouse Hotel in SAN ANDRES, COLOMBIA, said by panthdave above, seems to be nice. Its in UncleLocal.org http://www.unclelocal.org/COLOMBIA/SAN%20ANDRES/

Saltador says on Jun 21, 2008, 06:02:

I've stayed at Noblehouse hotel twice and will stay no where else in San Andres. What it lacks in location (It's not on the beach, but one block away) it more than makes up for in service. They only have like 10 rooms, so you will be treated like family. Anything you want or need will be taken care of. They can hook you up with a guy named Gustavo who will take you around the island off the tourist trail and you'll see and do some really cool things (for a propina of course) like snorkeling with sting rays. Even if you don't stay there I'd stop by and get his number, you'll be glad you did. PM me if you want I might be able to find it if I dig deep enough in my post-it pile...
