San Agustin Safety?

San Augustin I recently went by bus from Cali to San Augustin the long way, via Neiva - 16 hours. I went with the University that insisted that we travel that route. There were no problems and it was a beautiful but very long drive.
On the way back, our bottoms couldn't handle that again, so the professor let the bus driver go back through Popayan. From San Augustin to Popayan, it is a dirt and mud road, very uncomfortable, and about 8 hours. The scenery is is amazing. This was on a Sunday. Supposedly that road is very dangerous, but luck held and we had no problem. From Popayan to Cali it is like a superhighway for two hours.

We travel in 4 (2 adults 2 boys), are italians and speak spanish quite well.

Pasto - Mocoa - Pitalita - San Agustin Is this road safe at the moment? I hear the Putomayo region (Mocoa) is a bit dodgy. But, it can be exiting, and I have travelled the usual route via Popayan before (whivh is longer too, when coming from Pasto). Interesting with any info.
