Salsa En Cali

Dear All,

Hope all is well.

I've been told salsa music is what they play the most in clubs/discos in Cali, is this so? What about merengue, cumbia or some other type of music? There's a probably a crowd & club for specific type of music.

Second, are jeans and/or khakis (ala banana republic) ok to wear? or should jeans be the preferred dress code? How about dressy slacks & nice button-down long-sleeves?

I'm yet to meet a colombian that doesn't know how to dance salsa (except some from Medellin), does mostly everyone knows how to dance Salsa there & do women Expect guys to know it?

Thanks, your responses are appreciated.

La salsa todavía vive! Generally, salso is the passion in Cali, but I suppose it also depends where you go. If you go up to the clubs in Granada, they play mainly "crossover": a bit of a mix, with rock en español the main ingredient, but with salsa, merengue, reggeton, house or trance thrown in. Juanchito is more of a salsa stronghold, most places play 70 -80% salsa, with quite a bit of merengue, maybe a boleros, a bit of boogaloo as well. There´s quite abit of house and trance in the "afters" in the outskirts of Cali.

Again, dress code depends. Cali´s not that strict, though it´s generally a good idea to wear jeans rather than trainers, sorry, sneakers.

As for dancing. Well, not everybody knows how to dance, but most people do, at least to an OK level. Though to tell the truth, there´s not that many superbailerines like what I´d thought there´d be before I came: most people dance pretty averagely really. Why not take some classes when you get here? There´s some good, cheap schools, and its an excellent way to meet people.

Thanks! SiV,
Thanks for the info. I'm taking classes ahead of time since I just want to go & dance away although a quick class down there gives a good idea how the natives dance. Learning NY Salsa style.
Met another Colombian sexy paisa this past weekend with her lovely friend from Manizales; SHE THINKS I know how to dance the salsa but it shows that some from Medellin perhaps don't really know who dances good salsa. Someone from Cali would definitely not say that.
Been told jeans are just fine most times but how you mix & match matters BIG time, women are checking, grading you by that also.
Muchas Gracias!!!
