OO7 says on Jun 27, 2005, 12:36: Salsa Lessons I've been wanting to learn to dance Colombian style salsa, but all the instructors that I find in the South Florida area that I live teach Cuban style salsa. Nothing against Cuban salsa, but I would like to learn the way salsa is danced in Cali, Colombia. Does anyone know anyone in the Miami area that teaches Colombian-style salsa?

OO7 says on Jun 27, 2005, 13:57: Salsa Lessons Yeah, I know! I've been looking everywhere. This past weekend I went to a club in Coral Springs and everyone danced the style that I want to learn so I know there is got to be people that teach. There are lots of Colombians in the area.

ElCheAmericano says on Jun 28, 2005, 08:14: Hey Carlos Just wondering if the club you went to was Palladium on Sample and 441. If it is then alot of the people there go to a school called Latin Beat. I use to go to a school Salsa Knights but like everywhere else they teach cuban style which is damn near impossible for me to use in Colombia. There's some classes in Congo's that teach Mambo but I've yet to see anyone teach Colombian style. I guess the search continues.

OO7 says on Jun 28, 2005, 09:08: Soneros The club that I went to is called Soneros and is on Okland and 441. You have to go there and check how they dance. I totally fell in love with that style about two months ago when I first saw it and now I'm on a crusade to learn.

ElCheAmericano says on Jun 28, 2005, 09:16: I've heard of Soneros before I know they show some Futbol Qualifiers overthere, I didn't know they also used the place as a club. I'll have to check it out sometime. You might also be able to find a teacher if you get a local colombian newspaper like they have in the colombian restaurants and other establishments. Just an idea.

OO7 says on Jun 28, 2005, 10:52: Check it out! Yeah, you should go and check it out! I'm sure you will like it a lot better than the Cuban rueda. What the heck is that anyway? I like cuban style dancing, but I think la rueda is the biggest waste of time because I've never seen anybody do it, other than when they are teaching it. If you go, let me know what you think.

ElCheAmericano says on Jun 28, 2005, 11:08: I hate La rueda, I never saw the purpose of it. IF you find an instructor that teaches Cali style let me know, Please.

OO7 says on Jun 29, 2005, 10:35: No Problem I'm going to try to go to Soneros Saturday to see if I can find someone there and I'll let you know if I do. Another way to learn is to find a girl from Cali to go out and practice with.

miamimike says on Jun 29, 2005, 10:55: Go to some of the Places in Central Miami on down to Kendall, there are a LOT of places. Also, haven't you seen the little free paper(all in Spanish) called the Clarin? There are Dance Instruction Ads in there every(new one comes out every thursday in the morning)week. Also in the Clarin there is a very reasonably priced "Personal Column" where many Local Colombian Women place Ads in hopes of meeting their Media Naranja! Another Freebie newpaper floating around is the Colombian Americano-usually found at many(not all) colombian bars, restaurants and other small businesses here in the Miami Area. The Clarin is usually in a little rack and many times a bundle is dispensed around(outside) of many Walgreens,Dennys, the little corner stores--not hard to find.If all else fails, come to the Colombian Independence Day Festival-if you CANNOT find a Pretty Cali Dance Instructor there-you have NO PULSE! haha Avatar Legend: Bush "If any of you Reporters are wondering, it was a Size 10" 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

OO7 says on Jun 29, 2005, 12:18: Thanks for the info! Yeah, there are lots of places where they teach salsa, but this particular style that I saw just recently is not common at all and I've only seen it at two clubs. But you are right, I should try and find the Clarin and go from there. If your suggestions fail, what I'll have to do is go directly to the source, Cali, and find me the instructor along with the partner. What do you think about that? And I will not miss the Colombian festival.

miamimike says on Jun 29, 2005, 12:33: You needn't go to Cali to learn Salsa de las Calenos with ALL the Cale~as living in ALL areas of Miami.I have even seen Ads in this Clarin Paper where people would exchange langauge lessons(my favorite haha) for Dance lessons. And so many Colombian Tabernas here in Miami. There is a little Colombian Restaurant(north miami) located on Biscayne Blvd.at 119 st., across from the Large Bank of America, where they usually have a waitress or two from Cali and if you approached them politely they would probably give you lessons for $10/hr as that is a lot more then they earning at the Restuarant. These are down to earth Colombians working at this place, not the snooty types found in the Wealthy(ahem) Suburbs. OO7 says on Jun 30, 2005, 05:15: Salsa Yeah, I'll let you know if I find something. There are a couple of other people that are interested so maybe when I find an instructor I can arrange for group classes. Do you live in the South Florida area?

caslug says on Jun 30, 2005, 09:01: a suggestion.. With flights to COL being pretty cheap from Miami, couldn't you just fly down to Cali for a 3 or 4 day weekend and learn there? It's on thing for those us that have to take 10 hr or more flights to COL versus people who live in Miami and can take a 3 1/2 hr flight.

OO7 says on Jul 1, 2005, 08:05: Hey miamimike I think you have had the best advice so far. If you go and have lunch on Biscayne & 119st and you hear music coming from the kitchen it's probably me getting down with the waitresses. Seriously, if I find someone I'll let you know.

ElCheAmericano says on Jul 1, 2005, 08:22: Asere I've never been to Cuba. I'm not saying La Rueda is completely purposeless, it just not something I want to learn while paying for classes.

soccerstud says on Jul 1, 2005, 23:13: R U KIDDING? no offense against calenos but listen if u wanna learn salsa u want to learn from someone from the coast like cartagena or b/quilla because they have all the flavor that's pretty much their music. i would go there instead of cali if u wanna learn. and the best way to do that is to go out to a club ask a girl to dance and ask her to show u how and trust me they will love to teach a gringo how to dance.

OO7 says on Jul 6, 2005, 05:06: Boogaloo For those of you keeping up with this discussion, I found out the name of the style of salsa that I want to learn. It is called Boogaloo and if you want to hear the music listen to a couple of songs from Los Carruseles, a Colombian salsa group. Like I said, I fell in love with this style of dance and I'm determined to learn. So now that you know the style of salsa it will be easier for someone who knows an instructor to refer me to him or her.
