Salsa classes in Medellin

I know, there are a few posts on this, but they are not comprehensive.

I'm tired of apologising for my inability to dance. It used to be a good chat up line, now its just lame.

I'm looking for a place to learn salsa. Something authentic. Perhaps, Cuban. Certainly not like the cliché salsa schools you find in London. I want a Latin teacher... and not some Americanised Colombian who knows more about Miami than Medellin. Perhaps, an old Cuban man with a wispy beard and glasses (for my mum) and a young explosive cigar-smoking Paisa (for me). It has to be the real deal. Is this possible in Medellin?

The best way to learn Salsa is through private lessons, forget about studio instructions.

If you can find yourself someone who you can connect with, on whatever level that may be, ask them to teach you how to dance.

This will definitely be a learning experience you will never forget.

I saw a dance studio behind the Exito in Poblado (downstairs parking) up the creek on the opposite side of the street. If you are in that area you can ask for the dance studio. The school looked nice. I was going to check it out but I was on my way out of town. The adverstise Salsa, Flamingo, and other types. Check it out.

If you find something, can you post it. I am interested the next time I go.

Thanks.

If you want to learn Cuban style salsa and you're going to be in Medellin in late Jan and Feb, I can get you started but you're gonna need a dance partner. Cuban style is the most natural and the most fun IMHO. Also, I dance rueda style where you change partners. The girls eat that up!

Been through some of the schools in Medellin. Nothing to write home about.

bickerss says on Dec 22, 2007, 20:36:

I was looking for a place to learn and found a few places, however if you have any desire to see ecuador, I found great schools there in quito that teach for 4 or 5 USD an hour. You can also get a place to stay with own bathroom 5 minutes away (walking) for 7 to 10 usd a night and www.aerogal.com.ec fly there sometimes for under 200.

Sebastian says on Dec 23, 2007, 08:19:

Chrispej, I dance and teach as a hobby Rueda de Casino and I would love to collaborate with you in Jan. and Feb. I am here in Medellin indefinitely and I'm sure that I could dig up a partner. I learned in the states where I taught as well and would love to chat with you sometime. I want to teach here but to really take if to the next level you either need dedicated salseros o lots of teachers and preferably both. Seriously, hit me back and lets chat.

How popular is salsa in Medellin? My wife and I go out dancing but I notice that we sit out all but a couple of the salsa numbers. The merengue, the cumbia, the reggaeton, she's all over that. Is this just her personal preference or is salsa less popular?

Colombiche says on Dec 23, 2007, 14:48:

I once interviewed the now deceased puertorican born but caleno by adoption salsa great Tito Gomez

I asked him what the difference between colombianos and boricuas was when it came to salsa and this is what he said:

"Puerto Ricans dance, dance, dance.... The crazier you go with the Timbales and the more crazy stuff you do, the more crazy they go on the dance floor. Colombians on the other hand, listen to the songs and know the lyrics from beginning to end (de arriba a abajo). They sing while they dance, they feel it in their heart.... and if you get too crazy and start doing too much shit, se te sientan....".

john_stark says on Dec 23, 2007, 15:33:

That's interesting. My wife will listen to a song for a little bit before she decides whether she wants to dance to it or not. Unless it's merengue in which she's right up and out there on the floor. Damm we had a lot of fun last night. We put in an appearance at a boring gringo party that my wife called a meeting (no music and no dancing) and then headed to Arjon's which was packed. We got there about 10:30 and stayed for 3 hours. Sometimes the dance floor was so crowded that you could barely move but it was still fun. The thing I love about Arjon's is that you see people of all races and ages there having a good time united by a passion for tropical Latin music.

Salsa is kind of popular in Cali.

Sitting down at a bar in Avenida Sexta, Cali for a beer, the owner asked if I wanted an acompanante. Thirty seconds later a way-too-young chica is offering me to teach me how to salsa. When I said no thank you, she offered to give me a massage, muy rico. So I suppose private lessons are easy to come by if you want that sort of thing, or that sort of acompanante. I would like to learn to salsa better though, they do it so damn well here.

They go nuts for salsa here, more so in Juanchito district.

when you want to learn salsa first only private lessons and learn in the states or in europe, but not in colombia. the people of medellin cant dance, no salsa, no merrengue, no vallenato and no tecno. they can only put in silicon and no more, but you have to pay for the silicon :-)

Paisas definitely cant dance to techno... but then again, nor can I, and nor can most people in London unless they're eeeeed up, or black and not listening to techno.

I've seen some amazing salsa dancing in Medellin. Going by the above comments, schools here aren't great, so I'm still seeking a private tutor if anyone has any contacts.

So, where is the best place to salsa in Medellin?

coffee beaner says on Dec 23, 2007, 23:28:

NeroX where in Medellin have you been to say people don't know how to dance salsa, merengue and vallenatos? You must be blind cause Medellin is a big salsa city, the difference with Medellin and Cali is that here in Medellin the people are more into salsa romantica then power salsa, I suggest you hit up Sarao, Oro Solido o Jamboa and see the great salsa people dance here in Medallo... Vallenato go to all the Templos of el Vallenato if you wanna see people dance Vallenatos. The only dances I have seen that people here are not to familiar of how to dance like they do back in the States is Hip Hop and Bachata.

2 years colombia.

i called to many salsa schools in medellin but noone teach cuban salsa. go in the discos in the lleras or in the 70 and you will see that the people dance very different salsa, the only know the 6 mainsteps (atras, atras) and no more, when you want to do some vueltas (para ti para mi, beso, balsero, sombrero, dile que no, coca-cola) with the girls, its very difficult (or better forget it), they dont understand anything, but its like the same like in cali, but in every disco with 100 persons is always 1 couple who can dance good.

"Colombians on the other hand, listen to the songs and know the lyrics from beginning to end (de arriba a abajo). They sing while they dance, they feel it in their heart...."

Gotta agree 100% with that statement. And it's great fun to watch, especially when a hit song comes up or a ranchera/vallenato anthem! Cubans to a certain extent do this as well, accompanying the singer but also really dancing up a storm. :)

John Stark, I don't think salsa is all that popular in Medellin although I didn't go clubbing a lot when I was there. I do suppose there is some kind of salsa circuit down there, just not as big as Cali which is the salsa center of Colombia and I'd say all of South America.

usher127 would probably have an easier time learning in Cali, although the level of dancing is higher there as well, which can intimidate some newbies.

I'd also ditto what MedellinTraveller said about private lessons. That can really accelerate the learning process for newbies.

Ultimately, the only way to really learn is to ask many ladies out to dance. Here in NYC, we have many "dance socials" that are made-to-order for that. It's no big deal to ask a girl out to dance, even if the 2 of you are complete strangers. The socials are structured for the serious and student dancers, most of the people just drink water, maybe a beer at most.

I'm not sure if they have "socials" like that in Medellin, Cali, etc. It could be tricky to just ask any girl out because people tend to stick to their little group.

That's where the private lessons and one or two good female friends will really help.

The hard part is that different regions dance differently to the same music. I can't really bring my "New York on-two" style to Colombia. No woman can follow me because that timing just doesn't exist down there. So I have to adapt and dance "on one" which I almost completely deprogrammed myself from when I tried to learn the "on two" style. . .

Colombiche says on Dec 24, 2007, 10:19:

It was my crazy friends from Medallo that introduced me to REAL salsa back in when I was 15 years old. I used to think Jerry Rivera was salsa. They sat me down and introduced me to Maelo Rivera, Willie Colon, Cheo Feliciano, Richie Ray, Lavoe, Sonora Poncena, Ruben Blades, Johnny Pacheco, Justo Betancourt, Jose Monguito, Ismael Miranda, Larry Harlow, Mongo Santamaria, Eddie Palmieri, Ray Barretto, Lebron Brothers, El gran combo........ these guys were salsa encyclopedias, connoisseurs.... maestros.... hardcore. They used to tease the hell out of me when I listened to Adolecentes. They would tell, me "eso es una groceria, un insulto a la salsa si no apaga eso NOS VAMOS".

They weren't the best dancers in town (paisas dance salsa with a little funny two step that ends in a hop) but they knew more about salsa than ANYBODY I ever met (and I know and have talked to a lot of names in the salsa universe).

coffee beaner says on Dec 24, 2007, 10:26:

droble77 you definitely need to hit up salsa clubs in Medellin... salsa is huge here but they listen to a different type of salsa then they do in Cali. Here for example Maelo Ruiz and Son de Cali are huge, I've noticed that Cali salsa is similar to the one they dance back in NYC (Queens) clubs. My cousins here are so into salsa romantica and women love it here, I personally don't like it but to say that salsa in Medellin is not popular is like saying paisas don't eat arepas.

coffee beaner says on Dec 24, 2007, 10:30:

These are the 2 most popular salsa groups or singers here in Medellin.

usher127 says on Dec 24, 2007, 11:18:

That's ridiculous, why would I want to swing my hips and hold hands with a guy. Salsa is supposed to be sexy.

Anyways, I found 2 great places for good salsa, one in Parque Poblado and the other in El Centro, which is excellent!

Yeah, its easy to find dance partners, but I've been here a year now, I need to experiment, which is not easy on a public dance floor.

Man Tequila says on Dec 24, 2007, 11:28:

Yeah, they sure like the Fania All Star names here. Some colombianas have told me that when they dance salsa they do not listen to the words, that only the less serious dancers do this. Of course, everyone sings along to vallenato songs, and everyone knows all the words to the salsa songs too, including Los Matamoros, Tito Puente (sic?) and all the other Cuban salsa.

Hey MedTrav,

It is easy to laugh at people for trying something new. I am 100% gringo and I have beat latins in dance competitions, not because I am a great dancer but because I love Salsa and I have learned and practiced more than them. Those particular cuban dancers have been dancing since the womb but Calenos still beat them in international competitions! I have seen Swedes out-dance latins and africans. I have seen chinese dance the pants off cubans. So yeah, maybe I don't dance exactly like a cuban but I dance, and I dance a lot better than most paisas so go ahead and laugh, I'll be dancing with your girlfriend.

"droble77 you definitely need to hit up salsa clubs in Medellin... salsa is huge here but they listen to a different type of salsa then they do in Cali."

I hear you coffee bean. It's just that my stay in Medallo came after checking out Cali, and at least the people I hung out with and the clubs I checked out, I didn't get the impression paisas were heavy into salsa (from what I saw/heard, I thought they were more into electronica, vallenato, and reggaeton). . . whereas in Cali it's EVERYWHERE, even in the supermarkets! :)

I will definitely find time to check out the salsa circuit in Medallo next time I'm down there, I promise! ;0)

GIB: that seems a bit weird to teach that way in a group setting. Guys need to practice leading as many ladies around as possible in the group classes and vice-versa for the ladies.

I do recommend a guy take some privates with a man which I did many years ago. Only a man can really teach you how to properly lead the woman, a good male teacher will show you how it's supposed to feel for the lady. Male tango dancers do this as well.

Colombiche, I think the Lebron Brothers had a "second life" in recent years living, working, and gigging in Cali as well as other nuyoricans and Puerto-Ricans. As for the Rueda de Casino clip, the Cuban sound (and dance styles) has had it's own unique development since the late 70's thanks in part to the embargo and Cuba's isolation in general. Here in NYC, it's pretty much a niche following, can't really comment whether the "timba" sound of the past decade or so in Cuba has really penetrated Colombia, probably not too much either. . .

Colombiche says on Dec 25, 2007, 12:36:

You are right droble, the Cali Salsa scene actually resurrected some almost forgotten newyorican talent. Not to mention that Puertoricans like Tito Gomez found world wide recognition doing colombian salsa for grupo niche.
