I am curious to know how much salaries are in various parts of Colombia for foreign English teachers in private schools. I am a native speaker of English, but I am not certified to teach English. I have a year and a half of teaching experience here in Manizales.
How much should I be making here?

Bill Turley (Trustee board) (☼Travelguide writer) says on Aug 24, 2008, 15:09: I would say they start at $1,500,000 COP in the better schools in Bogota. I assume that you have a University degree (BA or BS) Mr. Bill Somondoco 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Hostal Tamarindo says on Aug 24, 2008, 16:08: In Medellín salaries start at about $1.200.000 COP but private schools are getting a bit reluctant about hiring teachers without experience or a degree because many schools are in the process of getting ISO certification and this would make them loose points. webjacks says on Aug 24, 2008, 17:25: Actually, I don't have my BS or BA, just an associates degree from way back. It sounds like I'm not doing too bad here then... I make $1'000,000 COP per month as a salary and another $1'000,000 COP for a living allowance (bonos).

asdfn says on Aug 25, 2008, 02:51: just curious philly - are there a lot of opportunities to teach english part time through a school, or were you working for yourself and only taking on 12 hours of business every week?

Philly says on Aug 25, 2008, 03:03: Lots, lots, and lots of opportunities. I am teaching now at a school, which is my second school that I have taught at. The first in a small town, the latter in a much bigger city. I have found the opportunities endless.

Hostal Tamarindo says on Aug 25, 2008, 14:57: The minimum wage in Colombia is $461.500 per month. When a person works between 10pm and 6pm they get 35% added on to their salary for working night hours. Some hostels swap guest stays in the hostel for working instead of paying a salary. Hostal Tamarindo says on Aug 25, 2008, 15:03: Villavicencio is no t a main city so you can expect to make less than in Bogotá, Medellín and Cali. You should get your work visa before coming in to Colombia, this will save you a trip out. As far as I know you must have a round trip ticket. Philly says on Aug 25, 2008, 17:08: Hostal, that is not entirely true. I got my work visa while I was already here. Some guy posted on this site a full explanation on how to get a work visa from Colombia, do a search to get his info, it was right on. Bradk, honestly I really lucked out. I was in the right place at the right time. I also have experience teaching with an under graduate degree and two graduate degrees. I would not take anything less. You will have to go to San Antonio, Ven., but for me it is right next door so it was not a problem
