safety of pan american highway from Cali to Pasto

Hello,

Has anyone ventured out of Valle towards Popayan or Pasto on the Pan American Highway lately?

I know it surrounds Guerrilla territory, however I havent read any reports of kidnappings or other mishaps along the highway, I guess it is patrolled by the military strongly? Am I correct? I would like to take a bus from Cali and go all the way to the Ecuadorian border..anyone else done this sightseeing trip?

Any comments welcome..!

Lately no but a couple of years ago I made the trip from Pasto to Cali with no problems. It´s nice to break the trip a bit by staying a night in Popayan.

I have done Cali to Popayan many times with no problems both day and night. But I have had family and friends that have expeienced problems in the past. the last time i traveled there was a lot of security and i felt very safe

I second Gator's suggestion. From what I've heard Cali to Popayán seems okay, however the advice was "preferably daytime"... but going further down the advice was "daytime only" by friends and family.

I did the trip en coche con mi novia ... 2 years ago. No problems.
She did it many times by bus since then, and one time about 5 months ago, it took 4 days.... due to torrential rains and guerrilla road blocks.

Ciao! Gustav.
