Via Cali Tulua Generally it is, als always bear in mind that Colombians drive like mad. The road is narrow (one lane until you get to Buga) and from there to Tulua it becomes two lane.

No Problems.... The road is good from Cali to Palmira and it is not bad all the way to Buga and Tulua. IMHO scenic from Palmira to Tulua. If you want the best sanchoco in Colombia swing on over to Ginebra on the way. about half way between Palmira and Buga. Try the sanchoco de gallina at Molino Viejo or El Viejo Juancho, the best I have every had. Distance say 100km to Tulua and about 55km to Ginebra.

from Cali northbound is ok My novia in Cali has to take the bus to Palmira and back about once a week and said it is safe ... in the past 6 months the bus only got stopped once by a roadblock and a gang of highway robbers during the daytime. Guerrillero activities are south and southwest of Cali, retreating now, the situation of a few weeks ago is getting better. Travel by night is not advisable.

Gangs? Gangs between Cali and Palmira? I highly doubt it. It is a Six lane highway with high traffic that connects Cali and the airport which is technically in Palmira. And by the way most people who go from Cali to Tulua head north from Cali and connect to the Buenaventura Buga highway when reaching Buga then on to Tulua. It is a nice highway all the way from Cali to Tulua. I have taken it lots of times even at night.

I was in Colombia in April and I drove a rented car from Cali to Armenia and back. I stopped in Buga and in Calima. I have never had a problem and I do this about four times a year and have been doing it for three years. I am an American and have never had a problem. They have Police and Military along the roads with some check points if you are not doing anything illegal and you have all your papers (drivers license, vehicles papers if it is rented or owned, passport, etc)you will be alright.
