Miami Herald Colombia/Politics
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) President Alvara Uribe gave the strongest indication yet he may seek an unprecedented third term in 2010, telling political allies in a private meeting he would consider running for reelection if it could prevent catastrophe.
Since winning a second term last year, the popular concervative leader has dodged questions about his political future, even as members of his majority coalition in congress have begun to lobby for his candidacy in 2010.
In talks at the presidential palace Wednesday, Uribe told lawmakers he'd seek reelection if a "hecatomb" or great slaughter or tragedy occured, said Nancy Patricia Gutierrez, the president of the congress, lower house who attended the meeting speaking to local media. Gutierrez said Uribe gave no further details.
Uribe spokesman Cesar Mauricio Velazquez said the president would not comment on private discussion.
Political opponents have called on Uribe to unambiguously reject seeking a third term.It is not a good idea for someone to perpetuate themselves eternally in power, said Jose Gregorio Hernandez,a former member of Colombia's Constitutional Court. A 2004 constitutional amendment enabled Uribe to seek a second term last year, and he won by a landslide.
With the economy growing at it's fastest pace in decades, and kidnappings and homicides sharply down from record levels, more than half of Colombians want Uribe to remain in office beyond 2010, an August poll by Bogota's National Consulting Center showed.
Legislators would have to amend the constitution again to allow him an additional four year term.

Sr Tertius says on Nov 4, 2007, 13:15: I just finished watching "The Fall of Fujimori." The resemblance of Fujimori's and Uribe's rise in popularity and power is astounding. I hope we don't repeat with Uribe the mistakes that the Peruvians made with "El Chino." "When the finger points to the moon, the fool looks at the finger" (Chinese proverb) |

Sr Tertius says on Nov 4, 2007, 21:29: Lot's of talk about that shit in the media. Apparently a hecatomb is the ritual slaughter of 400 cows, or the absence of a single cow who would run as a unity candidate to replace Uribe. Plenty of cows, maybe 400, and all of them want to be the next Uribe. "When the finger points to the moon, the fool looks at the finger" (Chinese proverb) |

kalder says on Nov 5, 2007, 10:49: Thing about politicians is- they're all a bunch of villains. You don't vote for the best one, you vote for the least awful. Which, to my mind and my working class Colombian in-laws, is Sr. Uribe. So let him have his other term. "kalder- have you ever had a woman?"--Sam Salmon |
