Roundtrip tickets to Colombia

Is it necessary to have a round trip ticket when entering Colombia or can you purchase a return ticket after you arrive? I would be traveling from the USA.

It's not necessary, I have entered Colombia many times on one way fares.
Having said that, however, the onus is on the Airline to ensure you have onward passage so they may insist you have an onward fare. Personally, unless they don't let you on the aircraft in the first place I wouldn't worry about it.

tried to think of something deep to write here.. but couldn't think of anything..

I've had avianca question me saying I need a visa... blah blah blah... american airlines doesn't care; DAS asks how long you're going to be in the country for but never have asked for any proof of departure... so in short a round-trip ticket is not necessary

xalanter,

If you don't have a onward or return ticket you MAY not be allowed on the flight, or refused entry to Colombia after landing.

I have seen it happen once and hear of it happening to others.

Basically is it worth the risk, up to you to make that decision.

You will have not problems - UNLESS DAS ASKS.

I all probability DAS will raise no concerns but it can happen. The main problem will likely be with your carrier.

I never had any problems. DAS will ask how long you are staying.

just make up a fake return e-ticket or buy a full fare return portion and get a refund once you have arrived in Colombia.
To get DAS extensions (after your initial 60 days) you may need to show your return flight ticket.

I've always had the return ticket, on standby mind you, last time didn't get to use it ended up paying full fare out, but no one has ever asked me for it. DAS asks how long you'll be there, but I just ballpark it and say 2 weeks rather than saying 12 days or something like that. No hassles for me.
