Romantic Restaurant in Medellin

I'm looking for a Romantic restaurant in Medellin. Someplace nice I can take my Sweetheart. Nice soft music would be a bonus. Something fairly casual as I'm not taking a suit or fancy dress clothes. Any ideas please include the nighborhood? Thanks.

nice restaurant..... it's been four years since my wife and i and daughter were in medellin, but she's from there, the daughter born there and i lived there for many years and i don't think there will be any major changes in nice places. surely there are more clubs around poblado, but that's an on going agenda. other's can report on them.

i always liked going up to las palmas and eating there. it's quiet, romantic (depending on the restaurant) and you have the view of the city. one favorite of mine is the intercontinental hotel. you can eat in the bar which is nice or you can eat down by the pool which is also nice. they often have live music and it's never loud.

i know of some places down town but i really couldn't give you directions. i could show you, but don't remember the names of the streets. too, i dislike recommending night activities in the central area simply because the potential for problems elevates exponentially in that area.

many of the nice europeanish restaurants that could be found in poblado closed in the mid nineties...marking the end of the 'capo' era. after that, i tended not to hang out there as it was a bit of a ghost town. now, so much has changed and current residents can give an up to the date report.

i know of many in the mountain area. really, really wonderful places which are safe, day or night. but it's a drive and if you don't have a car, you have a taxi driver for the night. so, you're better off in upper poblado/las palmas.

Here are a few Hola Eric, (you too dwm)

I've been living here for a few months now and have visited a number of nice restaurants to take a date. You will find a number of good cafes in Pargue Lleras although it tends to be very crowded Thursday through Saturday. One Italian restaurant that is easily overlooked at the park is Tramezini. Very good food and nice atmosphere.

For a spendid view of the city, try Tony Roma's on the top floor of the Dann Carlton Hotel. The dining area slowly rotates giving you a 360 degree view of the city. Another fancy but somewhat expensive (by Colombia standards) restaurant is the La Fragatta. Angus Bracus is also very good as well as Hatoviejo.

All these places are in El Poblado or Envigado, two nice areas of Medellin. The best steak I have ever had though was at a road side cafe on the way up to Llano Grande which is near the airport. I wish I could remember the name as it had a beautiful view, a nearby river, but no soft live music. The two inch sirloin steak however I could cut with my fork.

hato viejo i think it is spelled hato viejo and i've had their sizzling salmon platter more then once so if you need a change from beef try the salmon....it's to die for! also, hato viejo fits all your requirements and not too expensive.

Thanks all We'll try the Dann Carelton and/or the Intercontinental. I definalty like the revolving restaurant idea. In regards to the Llano Grande or hato viejo is tthis near the airport in Rio Negro or the one in the city? Were staying a day and night in Rio Negro and if it's a taxi drive from the hotel by the airport then that may be a good idea. However, I'm not sure of the taxi situaiton in Rio Negro.

You´re correct, it is spelled Hatoviejo. I just looked in the yellow pages and they have three locations. The one I was referring to is the one on Las Palmas just in front of the Hotel Intercontinental (another good dining choice). The other two locations are in Centro and Oviedo.

Speaking of fish, you might give Restaurante Nuqui a try. Very good food at reasonable prices. There are three locations and one of them is in Llano Grande (Paraje 3 puertas).

RIO NEGRO/LLANO GRANDE aha! my turf.

the whole area is great. if you drive back through llano grande towards don diego, you'll pass an excellent steak house and on your right about a quarter mile before don diego is 'la trucha' (it might have changed names) the steak house might be the one mentioned above.

both are superb. if you want an evening hang out around a fireplace, again, when leaving rio negro, going back through llano grande, just as you leave, you'll pass tutucan (a confama theme park) and just past it on the right is 'gualanday' a wonderfully funky centro commercio set in the woods and all made out of wood. this is a hang for artists, writers, sculptors and just plain great, open folks. on the left side of the front of the building is a pizza parlor. it has a fire place and wonderful ambience. the owners, jorge and 'mona' are great friends of mine...tell them, douglas the gringo said hello.

also, if you're there on a friday night, go to san antonio, it's next to rio negro...great weekend party land and agreat folks. any taxi will get you there.

let me know how it goes.
